Zambrano, Zegarra and Maicelo Victorious in Peru!
North Bergen based Peruvians Carlos "Mina" Zambrano, Juan "JZ" Zegarra and Jonathan Maicelo were all victorious last night at the Jockey Club in their native Peru, fighting before a crowd of around 8,000 people.
Zambrano, a slick boxing featherweight, teed off on Paraguay's Ramon Esparanza from the opening bell before dropping him with a straight right hand 2:15 into the stanza. Esparanza got up holding his shoulder area, prompting the referee to stop the contest.
Zambrano improves to 11-0 (5 KO's). Esparanza returns home with 13-3-1 (6) record.
Zegarra, a physical junior welterweight, swarmed Brasilian Julio Borges and hurt him in the opening round with a strong combination. Zegarra closed the show in the second decking Borges twice, first with a straight left and then shortly thereafter with a vicous head combination, knocking his opponent out.
Zegarra is now 5-0 (5), while Borges drops to 4-3-1 (2).

Francisco Contreras Heats Up For Bolanos Showdown!
IRVINGTON, NJ (June 24, 2010) Sensational junior welterweight prospect Francisco “THE PHENOM” Contreras of Irvington heads to Southern California next week to face off against Mexican veteran Noe Bolanos in the co-main event on ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights on Friday, July 2nd at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California.
The 26 year old Contreras has become one of the most talked about prospects in boxing since the Dominican native made his debut in the United States last June, brutally stopping Gustavo Mejia in the first round at Michael’s Eighth Ave. in Glen Burnie, Maryland.
Fighting all over the country over the next twelve months, the undefeated Contreras won five more bouts, four by knockout, stunning fight fans from coast to coast with his heavy handed power in both hands and raising his record to 14-0-0 with thirteen knockouts.
On February 5th at the Chumash Casino in Santa Ynez, California, Contreras made his network debut on Showtime, knocking out Juan Castaneda Jr. in the first round with a terrific combination of power shots, cementing his position as a must-see attraction to fight fans.
“Right after the Castaneda knockout, our phones started ringing with boxing writers and other promoters wanting to know more about Francisco. We’re very excited to have him on Friday Night Fights next week” said Chet Koerner, President of TKO Boxing Promotions.
The Dominican native is wrapping up training for next week’s scheduled eight round showdown.
“I’m already on weight, that’s never a problem. I know that he’s never been stopped but he’s never faced a puncher like me” said Contreras. “I would have no problem going the distance if need be, but if I see an opportunity for the knockout, it’s going to happen.”
About fighting on ESPN2 and the recognition he’s received since the Showtime bout, Contreras stated, “I’m excited to get back in the ring and fight again. I have a long way to go but I want to put on a great performance for the Southern California fight fans and the fans watching on ESPN.”
A native of Sonora, Mexico, the 23 year old Bolanos brings a record of 20-5-1 with twelve knockouts into battle against Contreras. In his last bout on December 12th, the veteran lost a very close, hard fought twelve round decision to Rene Gonzalez in San Luis Potosi, Mexico for the interim WBC Latino lightweight title.
Headlining ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights is a welterweight showdown between perennial contenders Demetrius “The Gladiator” Hopkins and “Mighty” Mike Arnaoutis.

Pierson TKO's Rodriguez in One!
Paterson's Richard Pierson had no time to show ring rust, TKOing previously unbeaten local favorite Reynaldo Rodriguez in the first round earlier tonight at Mechanics Hall in Worcester, MA. Pierson decked Rodriguez with an uppercut and when the latter rose at the count of 8, the referee waived the bout off just 2:32 after the opening bell.
Pierson improves to 9-2 (3 KO's) with the victory. Rodriguez, of Woonsocket, RI, drops to 5-1 (2 KO's).
On an interesting note, Pierson informed GSFS that Rodriguez was accidentally announced as the winner over the P.A system before the ring announcer was quickly notified of his mistake.

A Lesson Well Learned
By Jerson Ravelo
I'll start off by letting you all know that I had not been training for this fight. In fact I hadn't trained in months. The reason for not training was simply because my last fight before this one was on August 11th of 2009, also a last minute fight which like this one, I took because I just can't get any fights.
I have also been working. I have to pay my bills and boxing hasn't been doing it for the last several years. I have reached out to every promoter possible. No one wants to put fighters who are not signed by them on their shows, even if a fighters sell plenty of tickets. Of course if some promoter does put you on, then there are those people who go and question some promoters as to why they are putting certain fighters on their shows, and not their fighters, something I have had to deal with time after time when fighting in Jersey.
Well back to the fight last Friday night, it was a fight that I took last minute, I received a call offering me the fight, I didn't question it for one minute, first because I hadn't fought in about a year, I couldn't get a fight to save my life. I saw a video of the guy and quite frankly the guy did not impress me.
as the First round started and knowing that I had no training for this fight, I planned to fight a defensive fight, which I did, landed my shots and made him miss many of his. The second round was about the same, He threw a lot of punches and misfired with most of them.
I'm not sure if I was frustrating the guy, but it sure did seemed like it. He then basically intentionally headbutted me, everyone can see it was intentional. The slow motion replay showed it even better. I tried to get the referee to notice the huge gash under my eye, he ignored it and basically just said keep fighting. At the end of the round he called it an unintentional headbutt, did not get the doctor to see the eye.
I was dazed going to the corner, and dazed coming out for the next round. I then got caught by a right hand, being already dazed didn't help any, as I went down, I waited till the referee reached the count of 8 by the time I got up he had reached 9 and waved the fight off.
I will make sure I get back in the gym and stay in the gym and not take anymore last minute fights, fighting undefeated guys, champion or whoever they put in front of me makes no difference, I was never babied coming up, and I damn well ain't gonna get babied now, I'm a fighter and fighting is what I do, but I must be in fighting shape from now on. When this cut heals I'm right back at it.

Paterson's Richard Pierson Returns!
GSFS was notified that Paterson middleweight Richard Pierson will return to the ring Thursday to take on unbeaten Reynaldo Rodriguez over four rounds at Mecahnic's Hall in Worcester, MA.
Pierson, a one time prospect who served as a lead sparring partner for Kelly Pavlik, last fought in August 08', where he was stopped in the last second of a six rounder against grizzled Don Mouton. At 8-2 (5 KO's), Pierson is quite confident he will perform well but is worried about getting a fair shake in his opponent's backyard.
"I'm not worried about him (as an opponent)," said Pierson, who had few soft touch counterparts during his career. "(I am) just worried that if I don't score a (knockout), they will rob me out in his home town."
Rodriguez, 5-0 (2), may the crowd favorite, but like his opponent, will enter the ring with extended inactivity. The Woonsocket, RI native has been out of the ring since May 2004, when he earned a majority decision over Rashard Sanders.
Pierson is also familiar with the position, having fought just two of his professional bouts in the Garden State.
"I was always the opponent in my fights (and) took them on short notice." "I (never had) a tune up or fought a fighter that had more loses then wins, (so) come Thursday night, he will realize what he (got) himself into,"

Sheika Stops Strohl Inside of Three Rounds!
By Marc Abrams (in association with 15rounds.com)
Former four-time world title challenger Omar Sheika of Paterson took out journeyman Jim Strohl in three rounds in a scheduled eight round Light Heavyweight bout at Ceder Gardens in Hamilton Township, New Jersey.
It was all Sheika from the outset as he blasted away at Strohl with head and body shots that could be heard several rows back. The fight became one-sided in round two as Sheika was pounding away on a game Strohl and the underdog’s left eye became red and there were several instances where referee Lindsey Page was a punch or two away from ending things. Sheika came out to end the night in round three as he trapped Strohl on the ropes several times as he would land multi punch combinations that finally opened up at least one cut around the eyes of Strohl. One last flurry of body and head shots forced Page to jump in and halt the action in round three.
Sheika, 176 has now scored three consecutive stoppages and is now 29-9 with twenty-one knockouts. Stohl of Las Vegas is now 27-9.
Trenton's Terrence Cauthen boxed his way to an eight round split decision over Cleotis Pendarvis in a welterweight bout.
Cauthen consistently beat Pendarvis to the punch by landing some solid right hooks to the head and body and garbbing before Pendarvis could gesustained offense going.
Scores were 79-73 and 77-75 for Cauthen while a third card read 77-75 for Pendarvis.
Cauthen, 148 lbs, is 35-6. Pendarvis, 146 lbs of Los Angeles is now 10-3-2.
In an exciting four round Super Bantamweight bout, Benjamin Morales squeaked out a unanimous decision over Francisco Ortiz.
The bout was action packed throughout with bot guys standing toe toe and at some points did some good in-fighting on the ropes.
Morales got the better of the first two frames and maybe got the slight advantage in the final frame to win by a 39-37 tally on all three judges cards.
Morales, 122 lbs of Allentown, PA is 1-0. Ortiz, 122 lbs of Vega Baja, PR is now 1-1.
Rami Ibrahim scored a terrific one punch stoppage over Marcus Smith in a scheduled four round Lightweight bout.
Ibrahim was all over Smith in the first frame and landed a hard right that dropped Smith in the second. When Smith got to his feet he was unsteady and the referee stopped the bout at 1:02 of round two.
Ibrahim, 136 lbs of Philadelphia is now 3–1 with one knockout. Smith, 134 1/2 lbs of Trenton, is 0-3.
Charles Heyward scored a systematic unanimous decision over Reshawn Scott in a four round Light Heavyweight bout
All three judges scored the bout 40-36 in favor of Heyward, 177 lbs of Philadelphia and is now 4-2. Scott. 180 1/2 lbs of Philadelphia is 2-4.
Alando Swain got into the win column with an emphatic four round unanimous decision over alil Farah in a Super Middleweight bout.
Swain buckled Farah on several occasions and won by scores of 40-36, 30-36 and 39-37.
Swain, 162 lbs of Trenton, is now 1-1. Farah, 167 lbs of Philadelphia is 6-5.
Osnel Charles scored a four round unanimous decision over Ramon Ellis in a Lightweight bout.
All three judges saw the fight 39-37 for Chales, 134 lbs of Atlantic City who is now 3-2. Ellis, 137 lbs of Philadelphia is now 0-6.
The card was promoted by Nedal Boxing and can be seen on gofightlive.tv

Ravelo Stopped in Washington!
Newark's Jerson Ravelo suffered another devastating setback last night when he was stopped by Maxim Vlasov in the third round of a bout aired on ESPN 2's Friday Night Fights. Ravelo accepted the bout on short notice and was clearly not himself from the opening bell.
Vlasov was successful when fighting Ravelo in close range and decked 2000 Dominican Olympian hard with a monstrous hand in the third round. The game Ravelo surprisingly made it back to his feet at the count of 9 but was in no condition to continue, forcing Referee Jeff Macaluso to stop the bout at 1:12.
GSFS was notified by Ravelo just minutes after the bout that he plans to continue his career but will no longer accept bouts on short notice.
Vlasov improved to 18-0 (9 KO's) with the victory. Ravelo, who has been stopped in three of his last six, falls to 20-5 (12).

Perez to make TV Debut; Farrell Looks to Rebound from first loss July 16!
Newark's Alex Perez will take a notable step up in competition when he battles hard hitting Vincent Arroyo of Amherst, NY Friday, July 16 at the Prudential Center as part of a Friday Night Fights card.
At 11-0 (7 KO's), Perez has fought just twice since 2007, most recently defeating 31 fight veteran Joselito Del Rosario two weeks ago in the Dominican Republic. Perez, who was a top amateur, served as a lead sparring partner for Miguel Cotto and Joel Julio, mimicking former world champion Carlos Quintana before both men fought him. In his last bout in the Garden State at the Robert Treat Hotel (which is literally two blocks from the Pru Center) he scored a gutsy unanamous decision victory over tougher than advertiser Cory Peterson in the fight of the night.
Arroyo is a familiar face to locals, as he most recently scored a shocking come from behind 8th round knockout over Paterson's Jeremy Bryan. Against Bryan, Arroyo was being outboxed before catching the multi-time National Amateur champion and scoring a highlight reel knockout in the final round. His record is currently 10-1 with 7 wins by way of kayo.
Perez and Arroyo are slated to meet for eight rounds in the televised co-feature
Farrell Looks to Rebound from Lone Defeat!
Patrick Farrell was surprisingly defeated via UD last Sunday in Philadelphia by local favorite Kamarah Pasley, who dropped him for the first time as a professional in the process. Farrell, a hard hitting cruiserweight, has no interest in thinking about what went wrong.
The popular Jersey City native returns to the ring in the off-TV portion of the undercard when he takes on tough New Yorker Newton Kidd in a six round affair.
Even though Kidd has been inactive since 2008 he expected to present difficulties for Farrell. At 7-7-1 (4 KO's), Kidd is a former New York Golden Gloves Champion and most recently defeated 6-0 Sean Thompson in the latter's hometown. He also dropped a controversial decision to former world champion Lou Del Valle.
The card featuring Perez-Arroyo and Farrell-Kidd is headlined by Zab Judah, who is fighting in Jersey for the first time since 2003.

Peruvian Trio Returns June 26!
Manager Nelson Fernandez informed GSFS that North Bergen based Peruvians Carlos Zambrano, Jonathan Maicelo and Juan Zegarra all are returning to the ring June 26 in their native country as part of a big world title card.
Maicelo, 12-0 (8 KO's), battles rugged veteran Alberto Santillan in a ten round lightweight contest. Santillan has been stopped just once, most recently losing a majority decision to 18-0 Marcelino Lopez.
Zambrano, who is regarded as one of the best pure boxers among local up and comers takes a step up in competition to battle Ramon Esperanza. Esperanza has an impressive 13-2 record with 6 ko's and his defeats to well regarded Will Tomlinson and Pier Cote mark both times he previously stepped up in competition. Zambrano, 10-0 (4), and Esperanza meet over eight rounds at featherweight.
In his first bout since a controversial no contest, Zegarra steps into the ring against Julio Borges in a junior welterweight bout scheduled for four rounds. Outside of the no contest, Zegarra is perfect at 4-0 with all four victories coming by way of kayo.
This will be the trio's first bout since February 27, where all three also fought in Peru, with Maicelo and Zambrano scoring first round knockouts.
The card, which is taking place at Jocky Plaza, is headlined by wildly popular female fighter/WBA super featherweight champion Kina Malpartida.

Wolak, Diaz Win at Yankee Stadium
Rising junior middleweight contender Pawel “Raging Bull” Wolak of Mt. Arlington via of Poland grinded out a competitive ten round unanimous decision over New York based Irishman James Moore in the final untelevised bout of the evening Saturday night at the new Yankee Stadium. Wolak and Moore fought the duration of the bout at a phone booth pace, with Moore landing effective shots to the head in spurts, while Wolak relied on a consistent workrate, even though he landed few telling blows.
Moore briefly buzzed Wolak in the seventh with a short hook, but Wolak’s exceptional conditioning and determination ultimately proved to be too much for Moore, as the once promising prospect ran out of gas during the final three rounds.
Scores were 97-93 twice and 96-94.
Wolak, who may land a meaningful bout with the victory, improves to 27-1 (17 KO’s). Moore drops to 17-3 (10) following the setback.
Exciting featherweight prospect Jorge “King” Diaz of New Brunswick upped his record to 14-0 (9 KO’s) following an impressive sixth round stoppage over rugged Korean Jae Sung Lee. Diaz decked Lee with a right hand in the opening round and landed a number of precisely timed blows almost at will over the next four rounds. Diaz, who moved his head while boxing better than in prior bouts, also was successful in close quarters for both the body and head. Lee, who was game throughout the bout, got rocked by a right hand in the final round and a follow up barrage ended his night at 1:54.
“I always said I wanted to have a short and profitable career, but I have since changed (my mind)”, Diaz said about his new, more patient style. “I want to be more conservative with myself and my body so hopefully I can have a long career.”
Lee, who is now based out of NY, drops to 10-3-1 (2) with the defeat.

Green Steps up to Battle Evans in Miami!
GSFS was informed that Asbury Park based lightweight Chris "Smooth Operator" Green will take a notable step up in competition when he battles well regarded Yaundale Evans tonight on an ESPN televised card at the Fuchs Pavilion in Miami, FL.
Green, 3-1 (1), shut out Luquan Lewis in his most recent bout back in August 2009. Prior to that, Green suffered his lone defeat via unanamous decision at the hands of Mondre Pope.
At 7-0 (5 KO's), Evans has stopped four of his opponents in the opening round and also owns an impressive victory over awkward veteran Jason Rorie.
Green-Evans is slated for six rounds and will reportedly air as a swing bout if another fight ends early.
Pawel Wolak: “I am an elite Junior Middleweight!”
Mt. Arlington’s Pawel Wolak is anxious to throw his name in the pot of top 154 pound fighters. Wolak, 26-1 (17 KO’s), who is amongst the biggest ticket sellers in the Garden State, feels he is just one victory away from doing so.
This Saturday, Wolak battles fellow brawler James Moore in a highly anticipated ten round bout as part of the Miguel Cotto-Yuri Foreman untelevised undercard at the new Yankee Stadium. With less than three days until fight night, Wolak took a few minutes to speak with us. Here’s what he had to say.
GSFS: You are going to be taking on James Moore Saturday on a big card at Yankee Stadium. Tell us about it.
PW: I am excited for the fight and am definitely ready for it. I have trained extremely hard for seven weeks, have done the proper weight training and proper running, so this should be a great fight for me. I can’t wait!
GSFS: What is your assessment of James Moore? Have you watched any tapes?
PW: Yes I have seen a number of tapes. James is tough and he definitely brings the fight, but I have seen some mistakes so I am going to try and expose them.
GSFS: James Moore is somewhat similar to you in the sense that he likes to come forward and has bleed in past fights. With that said you have been boxing a lot more lately and did a good job doing so in your most recent bout against Ishmail Arvin. Against Moore, are you planning to fight fire with fire or box and move like Yuri Foreman did when he defeated him?
PW: I am going to do a little bit of both and adjust as the fight goes on and we will see what works better. I am definitely a fighter that likes to come forward and land big shots but it all depends how the fight goes.
GSFS: A fight between Moore and yourself had been discussed over the last few years locally. Both of you have since suffered defeats and are somewhat on different paths at the current moment. Do you feel this is a good time to face him or do you wish you faced him earlier?
PW: It’s definitely a good time! This is the first card at the new Yankee Stadium plus its taking place in New York where it should be.
GSFS: Both Moore and yourself are big ticket sellers. This is a huge card with Puerto Rican fans coming for Cotto, Jewish fans supporting Foreman, the Irish backing Moore, and of course, the Polish fans who follow you. Will the crowd size play a factor since it’s such a big card?
PW: There is always pressure, but the pressure for me is to win and be impressive in doing so. The stadium isn’t going to add any extra pressure, but I just have to win and that’s it.
GSFS: I know you work with trainer Aroz “Terrific” Gist in Paterson. Yuri Foreman also trains in Paterson with Joe Grier. Have you two ever sparred?
PW: I have been in the gym with him but we haven’t ever sparred together. I have been doing a lot of work with (unbeaten prospect) Steven Martinez for this fight.
GSFS: Tomasz Adamek is the biggest draw amongst Polish fighters. Being that he is a heavyweight on the cusp of a huge payday, he is likely going to have to fight in a casino or over in Europe, so Newark may very well be out of the picture. Would you feel comfortable being billed as the next big time Polish fighter and do you think you can draw sizeable numbers in Newark like Adamek?
PW: Of course that is the whole point! I want to move into that spot. Hopefully my fights can be exciting and the fans will want to come and see them.
GSFS: Shortly after your bout against Moore ends, a junior middleweight match up between Vanes Martirosyan and Joe Greene will air on HBO. If Vanes wins, do you see a match up between you two happening since you have been working with Top Rank?
PW: Definitely! I would love to face Vanes for a title or in an eliminator or something of that nature. I am not looking past Moore, but if I look good, the next step is going to be a top guy at 154!
GSFS: In your only defeat, you were outpointed by a slick boxer in Ishe Smith. What have you learned since then?
PW: I learned that at the top level, I have to be smarter. I knew that I was strong but I made some changes since then and my style has changed since training with Terrific. I am definitely going to be ready for a big shot a few months after the Moore fight.
GSFS: What do you most likely see happening next? Is there a specific fight or scenario in your mind?
PW: I see a title eliminator coming next.
GSFS: You are in a 154 lb division which does have some good fighters along with guys moving in and out of the division such as Paul Williams and Sergio Martinez. There is also Sergiy Dzindiruk, Yuri Foreman and Cory Spinks along with exciting contenders like Alfredo Angulo. Where do you feel that Pawel Wolak fits in?
PW: The division is tough and there are a lot of good fighters, but I also believe it is anybody’s division. Whoever prepares properly and lives the best outside of the ring (amongst the elite) will be on top. I definitely feel I belong with the elite at 154 lbs!
GSFS: As a fan of the sport, what is your take on the main event?
PW: I don’t know what is going to happen, but I am good friends with Yuri so I wish him the best. Yuri has to box and move, while Cotto will have to cut of the ring, fight on the inside and bang to the body to slow Yuri down, so whoever executes better will be the victor.
GSFS: Pawel, thanks for the interview. Do you have anything to add in closing for your fans and the readers of Gardenstatefightscene.com?
PW: Thanks to all my fans out there and make sure to come out to Yankee Stadium Saturday night.

IN THIS CORNER WITH JERSON RAVELO!
By Jerson Ravelo with Brandon Estrict
Back like we never left, In This Corner with Jerson Ravelo brings you into the mind of one of NJ’s premier fighters! Ravelo reaches out to our Brandon Estrict for the second edition of his blog, exclusively here on GardenStateFightScene.com! In this edition Jerson speaks on Mayweather-Mosley, reveals who his all-time favorite fighter is, and gives his take on stricter drug testing in boxing. Without further adieu, let’s get this started!
What's on tap and how does it feel being back in the gym.
It feels good being in the gym, even though I have nothing coming up, I mean I'm going thru the same scenario that I have been going thru for the longest amount of time, Not being able to get fights on my own because promoters are very selfish when it comes to putting a fighter who is not on their stable on a show, even if the fighter sells enough tickets to pay for his entire fight, Also getting fights offered to me from left to right, and these so called fighters not wanting to take me as their opponent after I say yes to their offer.
What did you think of Mayweather-Mosley?
I though the fight was good for the first two rounds, they were exchanging punches, Mosley even hurt Mayweather a couple of times, but after the second round, once Mayweather figured him out and Mosley blowing his load when he thought he was going to knock Mayweather out, then it just became a target practice for Mayweather, even though I'm not a Mayweather fan, the guy is a great fighter.
What do you think about the Mayweather-Pacquiao drug testing hurdle? Would you take the tests if an opponent asked you?
Well it would all depend on the situation, for example, Mayweather is so impressed with Pacquiao's recent performances, that he think it's because he's on steroids, if I was Pacquiao, I would love to go into a fight with Mayweather making him think whatever he's thinking, and have an edge going into the fight, if I was Pacquiao, I would get tested, but not in the time frame that Mayweather is requesting, I mean he agreed to 14 days before the fight and the next day after the fight, I doubt they can develop a steroid that can only work 14 days prior to a fight and exits your system several hours after the fight, The fight will get done, too much money involved for both fighters and for boxing.
Who is your all-time favorite fighter?
My favorite all time fighter is Roy Jones Jr, I actually learned how to fight on my own by watching tapes on Roy Jones Jr, and Felix Trinidad, But I think Roy Jones Jr has been the best fighter my eyes have seem, we're talking in my lifetime, here's a guy who made fighters look very average, then these fighters would go on to win World Championships, and hold those Championships for years, ad that says a lot about Roy Jones Jr.
What are your goals in boxing at this point, what do you hope to accomplish before you're done.
Well my first goal at this point is to just get back in the ring, once I get back in the ring and stay busy then my goal would be to fight for a Regional Title and then of course fight for a World Title, I feel it's very achievable as long as I'm able to get fights, I have fought 10 times in the last 8 years, it's very frustrating, but I'm still not giving up, god will let me know when I'm done, and he has yet to send the fat woman to start singing, Hopefully I will get back in the ring this Summer.
