Witherspoon Stops Castillo in AC!

By John Wall

A capacity crowd turned out to support Philadelphia’s Chazz Witherspoon (26-2 18 KO’s) at the Grand Ballroom of Trump’s Taj Mahal in Atlantic City. The partisan crowd was hoping Witherspoon would return to his winning ways, while cagy veteran Livin Castillo (16-8 10 KO’s), of Atlantic City via Ecuador, a much better fighter than his record would indicate, was looking to make Witherspoon’s degree in pharmaceutical sales to use as his source of income.

Witherspoon got off to a slow start, losing the first four rounds on my card. Although he was the bigger man, Witherspoon was unable to mount an offense and was fed a steady diet of body shots by Castillo, whose game plan looked to be pot-shot then get out of range. The fight plan was working beautifully, on paper, as Castillo won the early rounds, taking no damage, but also delivering very little as well.

Sensing their fighter needed a lift, those in attendance came to life at the start of round five. Witherspoon did as well, feeding off the new energy. The St. Joseph’s university graduate started fighting with a greater sense of urgency, rediscovering his right hand, but his power shots failed to find the mark and the round that started as momentum changer ended with an even more confident Castillo.

One of the beauties of heavyweight division is a big strong man is never out of the fight. The fatal flaw in Castillo’s plan was letting a fighter with Witherspoon’s punching power hang around to long. The Philadelphia crowd soon got what they drove down the Atlantic City Expressway to see.

Early in the seventh round Witherspoon unloaded a right uppercut to the chin of Castillo that sent him to the canvas. A game but rubber legged Castillo got up, but Witherspoon landed several more right hands, forcing Referee Earl Brown to stop the contest at 2:21 of the seventh round.

In a battle of Super middleweights Philadelphia’s Farah Ennis (16-0 10 KO’s) bested an out classed Reggie Pena (6-4 1KO’s) from Ocala, Florida. Pena has a habit of leaning in with his head and Ennis was only to happy to use his right uppercut to demonstrate why that is not a good idea. Pena did manage to mount an attack in the third round only to be knocked down by a body shot in the closing seconds. Ennis sealed the deal in the third by another body shot and Pena was counted out at 1:56 of the round.

In a six round lightweight, contest Jose Reyes (23-8 8 KO) of Vineland got bested by Colombia’s Walter Estrada (37-13 25 KO) in a split decision. Estrada, a southpaw, knocked Reyes down in the first with a left cross. Estrada suffered a cut to the bridge of his nose in the fourth round. But his better ring generalship carried the day and swayed the judges his way. Scores were 58-55 and 57-56 for Estrada, with the third card reading 57-56 Reyes.

In a one sided match in the light heavyweight division Lavarn Harvell (6-0 3 KO) of Atlantic City knocked down Jackson, TN’s Nathan Bedwell (2-4 1KO) three times in four rounds on his way to a unanimous decision victory. Scores were a lopsided 40-33 on all three cards.

Super Middleweight (and son of former heavyweight champion Bruce Seldon) Isiah Seldon (2-0 1 KO) of Atlantic City drew a nice crowd to his second pro fight and didn’t disappoint them, stopping Jason Johns (0-3) of Danville Virginia at 2:57 of round 1.

In the opening bout of the evening, Atlantic City’s Eugene Soto (3-0 1KO) added another win to his record besting Maurice Williams (1-6 1KO) of Camden via majority decision. Mr. Williams may be the cockiest 1-6 fighter of all time and his clowning in the ring may have cost him in the judges’ minds. The scorecard of 37-37 was overruled by tallies of 38-36 and 38-37 for Soto.

Amateurs Rock The Palisadium!

Tonight was the first card this writer covered where Boxrec.com couldn’t serve as a reference tool.

There weren’t any titles up for grabs and only two of the bouts were scheduled for more than three rounds. A ten point must system was nonexistent. Hometown decisions didn’t come into play. Most importantly, the combatants fought for pride and experience, not paychecks.

The Dover Boxing Club presented an entertaining fourteen fight amateur card at the elegant Palisadium in Cliffside Park, which has a breathtaking view of New York City. The venue was comparable to nearby Schuetzen Park, a popular North Jersey club show venue. Those on hand cheered loudly for the fighters they came to support, but also paid their opponents homage.

“I have always loved working with the amateurs,” said Rich Stoltenborg, the Dover Boxing Club’s Director who organized the show and also trains multiple pros. “It’s a different level of course but this is the heart of boxing. This is where the kids begin from eight years old until some of them turn pro.”

Stoltenborg also acknowledges that things are a lot smoother in the unpaid ranks than in the pros.

“Everybody basically gets along even though there are some arguments.” “We are all here for the same reason to build these kids’ character, keep them off the streets and keep them honest.”

Here are this evening’s results

170 lb Sub Novice: Darius Wesley (Silver City Boxing Club) Dec Henry Logan (Dover Boxing Club)

147 lb Sub Novice: Justin McGee (Middletown PAL) Dec James Kuehnapfel (Dover)

180 lb Sub Novice: Paul Stanton (Union City Boxing Club) Dec Dave Shahinian (Evolution)

Heavyweight Showdown Tops Taj Mahal Card

By John Wall

It’s going to be hard to top last Saturday’s heavyweight fight between Tomasz Adamek and Michael Grant, but Trump's Taj Mahal in Atlantic City will give it try as they play host to another heavyweight match up featuring Philadelphia's Chazz " The Gentleman" Witherspoon, 26-2-1 (18 KO’s), against Livin “La Maquina” Castillo 16-8 (10 KO’s).

The 5' 11" 34 year old Castillo, a rugged veteran southpaw from Ecuador who now resides in Atlantic City, has a reputation for taking on all comers, so don’t be fooled by his record. They have come by way of some impressive opposition including future Undisputed Cruiserweight Champion Jean Marc-Mormeck, future WBC Heavyweight Champion Oleg Maskaev, IBF #1 ranked contender Alexander Povetkin, and former WBA Champion Bruce Seldon.

The younger (28) taller (6’ 4”) Witherspoon should present yet another difficult fight for Castillo.

Witherspoon, a Paulsboro resident with a degree from Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia, started his professional career with twenty-three wins fifteen by KO before losing a controversial third round disqualification to Chris Arreola. He won his next three contests by KO before losing, in a slugfest, to former world heavyweight contender Tony Thompson on the undercard of the Jermain Taylor- Jeff Lacy bout.

With Witherspoon in need of a win to put himself back in the picture and Castillo’s reputation for always coming to fight, Spartan Fight Promotions’ first ever card should provide an entertaining night of entertainment.
The action packed undercard features lightweight contender Jose Reyes (23-7, 8 KO’s) of Vineland, super middleweights Joel De La Paz (5-0, 4 KO’s), Eugene Soto (2-0, 1 KO), light heavyweight Lavarn “Baby Bowe” Harvell (5-0, 2 KO’s), Isaiah Seldon, (1-0), bantamweight Qa’id “Kid Dynamite” Muhammad (5-0, 5 KO’s), all of Atlantic City as well as Philadelphia super middleweight Farah Ennis.

Introducing Qa'id Muhammad!

At 5’2 118 lbs, Atlantic City’s Qa’id Muhammad is literally easy to miss. Few fighters, especially Americans, on the East Coast compete in his division, thus fans don’t typically take interest in the lower weight classes. Dubbed as “Kid Dynamite”, Muhammad believes he is the man to change that.

He had a sensational amateur career, winning numerous national tournaments en route to finishing with an 89-9 record. As a pro, Muhammad is a perfect 5-0 with all of his victories coming by way of knockout. Ringsiders have been wowed by his dynamic style, phenomenal hand speed and championship heart. In two of his victories, the twenty one year old overcame opening round knock downs en route to scoring a scintillating stoppage.

GSFS had the opportunity to catch up with Muhammad, who will fight an opponent to be announced Saturday in AC.

Garden State Fight Scene: Qa’id, you will be fighting for the first time in over a year Saturday night. What caused such a long layoff?

Qa’id Muhammad: I had a wrist injury that needed to heal. My father and I were also taking our time to work on things and perfect my game.

GSFS: I know you were a great amateur and are undefeated with all knockouts as a pro, but you’ve also been knocked down a few times already. Do you feel that sometimes perhaps the crowd gets to you?

QM: Yeah! Sometimes I get in the ring and (think that since) I am under the spotlight I have to impress the fans. This can lead to me trying to do too much and has caused me to get knocked down.

GSFS: Are there any fighters that you look up to?

QM: Yes, Meldrick Taylor, Terry Norris and Floyd Mayweather. People also tell me I fight like that bantamweight from Africa (Joseph Agbeko) so I will start watching him as well.

GSFS: Four of your five fights have been in Atlantic City. What does it mean to you to consistently fight in your hometown?

GSFS: I am trying to build a fan base and follow in the footsteps of (late former lightweight champion and Atlantic City native) Levander Johnson and Arturo Gatti since they were big here. I would like to go on the road to fight as well.

GSFS: You fight in a weight class where most of the good fighters aren’t from the Northeast Region and fans don’t seem to follow around here. Do you feel that you this can cause you to be overlooked?

QM: My style will make (the fans follow me) because my fights are exciting! The fact that I am the only bantamweight around here also puts me in a class of my own.

GSFS: Does that also make it hard to find sparring?

QM: I don’t really have many guys my weight I spar with. I spar with a lot of heavier guys. It’s kind of fun to work with bigger guys because I can see that I can handle myself, but at the same time, my father makes sure that everything is in control.

Editor’s Note: Muhammad has sparred with stablemates and fellow unbeaten AC natives Joel De La Paz and Eugene Soto (super middleweights) as well as Lavarn Harvell (light heavyweight)

GSFS: You were 89-9 as an amateur and won plenty of tournaments prior to turning pro. What do you remember most about the amateurs?

QM: Fighting in the Pan-American Games, fighting with the US Team in Morocco and winning the Olympic Trials.

GSFS: Being that there isn’t a ton of money and a huge following in the lower weight classes, do you blame two time US Olympian Rau’shee Warren for trying to make it to the games a third time or do you think its time for him to turn pro?

QM: If I was in his spot I’d turn pro. I am sure that as a two time Olympian the money would be coming in his direction (regardless of what weight class he fights in).

GSFS: What is your outlook for 2010 and beyond?

QM: I want to be a champion in five weight classes from 112 to 126 pounds.

MY: Do you have to say in closing to your fans and the readers of gardenstatefightscene.com?

QM: I hope everybody comes out to support me for every fight. They are coming to see a good fighter and they will have a good time watching me.

Judah-Clark Tickets on Sale!

Former Undisputed Welterweight and Junior Welterweight Champion Zab "Super" Judah (39-6, 27 KO's) of Brooklyn takes the next step in his quest to regain his Junior Welterweight Crown on Saturday, October 2nd, when he takes on Michael "Cold Blood" Clark (40-5-1, 18 KO's) of Columbus, Ohio at Newark's spectacular Prudential Center Arena.

Tickets, priced at $53, $78, $103 and $200 go on sale today at "The Rock" Box Office and on Ticketmaster.

A veteran of "The Contender" boxing series, Clark has been on a winning streak since his 2007 fight with top ten prospect, Mike Alvarado, was stopped due to a hand injury. In his most recent bout, Clark won a unanimous decision against Jason Pires in May. "Cold Blood" came to Judah's attention when he approached Judah's promoters and asked for the bout.

"We contacted representatives of just about everyone among the top 20 junior welterweights in the US and abroad and offered them a fight with Zab" Promoter Kathy Duva of Main Events said. "They all turned us down. Michael Clark, on the other hand, called up and asked for the fight. You've got to admire and reward that kind of passion and confidence. Michael Clark is certain that he can beat Zab Judah and he wants to come to Newark and prove it."

"I have all the respect in the world for Michael Clark because he is willing to come to the Prudential Center to face me," Judah, whose "Super Judah Promotions" is also co-promoter of the bout, said. "The top junior welterweights want no part of Zab Judah. We had a great night in Newark this summer and expect to give the fans an even greater night in October. Zab Judah is all the way back!"

Over 4,000 motivated fans turned out at "The Rock" for Judah's return to the ring in July when Judah scored a spectacular knock out over a very game Jose Armando Santa Cruz. The show was an all-around success, as fans were entertained from top to bottom with a series of explosive undercard bouts leading up to the main event.

"On Oct. 2nd at Prudential Center Clark will be Zab's second victim on the way to the top of the junior welterweight division," Bill Halkias of Super Judah Promotions, said. "Zab's TKO victory against Santa Cruz proves he hasn't lost a step. He has developed into a stronger, faster and smarter fighter. Michael Clark will learn first-hand what it's like to fight a great fighter who has become an even greater fighter," he added. "Zab will continue to make highlight reels with his crushing power and the fastest hands in boxing. He is determined to be the best and anyone in his way will learn that the hard way."

An exciting slate of undercard bouts is also being planned for October 2nd. An announcement about those fights will be made shortly.

The fight, promoted by Main Events and Super Judah Promotions, will take place on Saturday, October 2nd at Prudential Center, Newark, NJ.

Tickets priced at $53, $78, $103 and $203 (ringside) can be purchased at Prudential Center Box Office, by calling TicketMaster at 800-745-3000 or www.Prucenter.com.

Adamek Decisions Grant in Newark!

By Matt Yanofsky and Dylon Silversey

Jersey City's Tomasz Adamek retained two minor titles with a twelve round decision over former contender Michael Grant of Blue Bell, PA. Adamek dominated his taller and mostly tentative opponent with left hooks and right hands on the inside throughout the bout. Grant was unable to get an offensive rhythm and ate left hooks throughout the contest.

In a sheer show of desperation, Grant came out aggressive in the final round and even buzzed Adamek, but he was unable to finish him off or even come close.

Scores were 117-111, 118-110 and 118-111.

Adamek improves to 42-1 (27 KO's). Grant, who may end up retiring, slips to 46-4 (34 KO's)

After a brief delay due to a problem with the ring ropes, former ESPN Prospect of the Year Joel "Love Child" Julio got back on track after getting stopped by Alfredo Angulo in April by scoring a ten round UD over a very game Jamal Davis.

Davis boxed somewhat well early, but Julio took over in the fourth round, hurting Davis on multiple occasions with vicious left hooks and huge right hands. Julio appeared en route to stopping the bout in the sixth, but surprisingly lost his firepower after that. From rounds seven to ten, Julio was far more economical, outboxing his game but outmatched opponent.

Scores were 99-93, 98-92 and 97-93.

Julio, of Miami, FL by way of Colombia, improves to 36-4 (31 KO's). Davis heads home to Philadelphia, PA 12-7 (6 KO's).

2008 US Olympian Sadam "World Kid" Ali improved to 9-0 (5 KO's) after embarrassing rugged but raw Lenin Arroyo in five rounds. From the sound of the opening bell, Ali was clearly in control. He landed virtually every punch he threw, putting together impressive and quick combinations.

The bout began to look like a sparring session, as Ali started to showboat a bit, impressing the packed house at the Prudential Center. Arroyo regularly missed with with wild punches and was never remotely in the fight. Ali ended the show in the fifth round with a massive left hook to the body, which put Arroyo down for the count.

Ali, of Brooklyn, NY, is an intriguing prospect who is starting to generate interest from boxing fans nationwide. Arroyo, of Florida by way of San Jose, Costa Rica, slides to 20-13-1 (4 KO's) after being stopped for just the second time.

Paterson's Jeremy Bryan got back on track after stopping Daniel Mitchell at the end of the first round. Bryan dominated the first round of the junior welterweight contest with a solid attack to both the body and head of his tentative opponent. Late in the round, Mitchell began to hold his right eye following a clinch. Michell, who literally threw less than ten punches in the opening round, quit on his stool.

Bryan improves to to 14-1 (7 KO's). Mitchell slides to 5-2-1 (2 KO's) and returns home to Pittsburgh with a definite lack of toughness.

Shemuel Pagan out of Brooklyn started his professional career in style. After displaying his brilliant hand speed in the opening round, the five time New York Golden Gloves champion sent his opponent, Raul Rivera, to the canvas early in round two with a powerful counter right hook. Pagan had little trouble throughout the rest of the fight, ultimately winning his debut by unanimous decision, with scores of 40-35, 40-34, 40-34.

After his debut, Pagan record stands at 1-0, and Rivera in the loss, falls to 0-3.

Osnel "Prince" Charles, out of Atlantic City, sent Union City's Hector Collado to the canvas early in round one. It was exactly what the 4-2 fighter needed to take the victory as Collado gave him trouble throughout the bout. The middle rounds of this fight could have went either way, but the dominant fourth round by Collado made this fight closer on the scorecards than "Prince" would have liked. The judges at ringside scored the fight 38-37, 38-37, and 39-37, all in favor for Osnel Charles. Hector Collado falls to 0-2-1.

Middletown lightweight Tyrone Luckey made his pro debut a successful one, demolishing fellow debutant Larry Yanez of Ft. Lauderdale, FL in 54 seconds. The former three time Golden Gloves champion decked Yanez seconds into the bout with a left hook and a strong follow up assault from Luckey ended his night.

Luckey is now 1-0 (1 KO). Yanez is 0-1.

"The Big Challenge" Card Preview

“The Big Challenge” Preview

By Dylon Silversey and Matt Yanofsky

This Saturday from Prudential Center in Newark, Tomasz Adamek looks to continue his quest up the heavyweight ranks when he battles once promising Michael Grant over twelve rounds on pay per view. With an arena full of Adamek’s passionate followers along with a bevy of local talent, the 12,000 plus fight fans expected to be on hand are in for an exciting night at “The Rock”.

Once dubbed as the next great American heavyweight, the 6’ 7” Grant, 46-3 (34 KO’s), fought through the heavyweight division with relative ease in the late 1990’s, until he was matched up against arguably the best heavyweight of the past 20 years in Lennox Lewis.

Lewis brought Grant back to earth, demolishing the Blue Bell, PA native in less than two rounds. Grant’s record is 15-2 since that night and the boxing world has learned plenty about him. His chin, heart and lack of toughness were all exposed, with both of his other defeats also coming by knockout. He has however reeled off 8 straight victories. Grant, who according to multiple reports had an outstanding training camp under Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, feels that it is his turn to become once again a factor in the heavyweight division. If he does pull out a victory, the 38 year old and 8 to 1 underdog would make a major statement while likely securing a title shot.

However, the man standing across the ring from him has different plans. Adamek (41-1 27 KO’s), of Secaucus, is coming off an impressive majority decision victory in California against title contender Cris Arreola. The fight was a battle throughout. Adamek had trouble early getting comfortable with the style of Arreola, but he fought brilliantly in the championship rounds to claim a victory.

Adamek must use his powerful jab and consistent movement, as displayed against Arreola, to defeat his taller opponent. If Grant is going to pull off the upset, expect him to do so by working from the outside and using his reach advantage to stifle Adamek. Interestingly enough, Grant’s trainer Eddie Mustafa Muhammad was Chad Dawson’s chief second when he handed Adamek his lone defeat.

In the co-main event of the evening, Joel Julio (35-4, 31 KO’s) of Colombia returns to the Garden State for the first time in nearly five years to battle Philadelphian Jamaal Davis (12-6, 6 KO’s). This will be the always entertaining Julio’s first matchup since being knocked out in a slugfest by rapidly rising Alfredo Angulo in April. In a back and fourth fight, Julio stood his ground into the 11th round until he was met with a hard right cross that decked him. Referee Raul Caiz put an end to the fight when Julio seemingly couldn’t stand on his own.

In what should be an exciting fight against a tougher than advertised Davis, expect to see some heavy shots landed in this one, and in Julio’s eyes, a knockout would help put him back on track.

2008 US Olympian Sadam Ali of Brooklyn, NY will take a step up in competition when he battles iron chinned Floridian Lenin Arroyo (20-12-1, 4 KO’s). Ali, (8-0, 4 KO’s) has been mentioned amongst boxing’s top up and comers following his ESPN2 televised victory last month.

In his most impressive performance to date, Ali showing precise punching and power in dismantling Julias Edmonds inside of three rounds. The Prudential Center crowd will certainly be on the edge of their seats, awaiting fireworks once again, from “The World Kid”.

Paterson native and former multi-time National Amateur champion Jeremy Bryan (13-1, 6 KO’s) of Paterson will look to erase the memory of his disappointing knockout loss to Vincent Arroyo, when he matches up against Pittsburgh, PA’s Daniel Mitchell (5-1-1, 2 KO’s) in the opening bout on the televised portion of the card. A gifted boxer who knows how to be aggressive when need be, Bryan was widely considered New Jersey’s best prospect prior to his lone defeat. The bout is scheduled for six rounds at junior welterweight.

The night will begin with the debuts of heralded prospects Shem Pagan and Tyrone Luckey. The heavily hyped Pagan is only one of two boxers, the other being Glen Ghany, to win five New York Golden Gloves titles. Many boxing observers see Shem as a future champion and cannot wait for him to get his professional career rolling. His debut comes against Philadelphia resident Raul Rivera (0-2) in a four round lightweight matchup.

Luckey, a three time New Jersey Golden Gloves Champion based out of Middletown, battles fellow debutant Larry Yanez of Florida in a four round junior lightweight matchup.

Union City's Hector Collado, 0-1-1, will also battle Osnel Charles,3-2, of AC in a four round lightweight affair.

From top to bottom, “The Big Challenge” is clearly worth the price of admission.

Grant-Adamek Final Presser Quotes!

Michael Grant: "I'm blessed to have the opportunity to fight Tomasz and my man Roger over there. No doubt it's going to be a nice night for the fight community, for the boxing world period. The heavyweight division is sad right now, so I just say, don't lose hope. Don't lose hope, because I know the belts are over the water right now, but they'll be back. They will definitely be back!"

"How do I see the fight playing out? Okay let's play with this...He's (Adamek) probably going to try to figure out the punching power for the first 3 or 4 rounds and then make a decision; 'Okay do I want to gamble or not'. Meanwhile, while he's thinking about gambling I'm already gonna be putting power out, dropping hands on him. So then you're into a 'what should I do?' moment. You got to make sure that those decisions don't make you delayed so bad where you start getting caught. And sometimes when you start getting caught, and getting caught, it messes all the decision making up and that can be very hurtful."

"I don't take anything away from Adamek, like I said he's a helluva light heavyweight champion. But I'm an elite fighter. I'm not like a Jason Estrada or a Chris Arreola, that's not my level."

Grant speaking of Golota style vs. Adamek style: "In those two different styles Golota was a puncher and slightly a boxer, where Adamek is more like a boxer. You know what I'm saying, he's not a puncher. I'm not saying the fight's going to be easy with that. He has the strength in that. He became light heavyweight and cruiserweight champion, correct? And so God bless him."

"My ability is basically what it (the deciding factor) is. I'm not banking on size and strength."

Roger Bloodworth: "You can tell its going to be a good fight. We have all the respect in the world for the Grant camp and we took this fight cause Tomasz had to be able to prove he could hang with a big man. So whoever named this 'The Big Challenge' may be exactly correct." "Tomasz is ready and I expect a great fight."

"We haven't thought about what's next. We're just thinking about this fight and that's it."

Tomasz Adamek: "Sunday we'll talk about what's next, but Saturday we have a job."

"Every fight is very important. Only when you win, you go up. In boxing you can never be second. My whole career I prepare to be the best."

"I am very excited to be back at Prudential Center. Every fight a couple thousand more people come to see me. Everybody knows me in NJ."

"I'm ready to fight. When I'm healthy I am very quick, I am dangerous in the ring. I've been training very hard for 11 weeks. Size is no bother to me. I had 2 very good sparring

The Boxing World Speaks on Adamek-Grant!

This Saturday night at Newark's Prudential Center, former light heavy and cruiserweight champion Tomasz Adamek of Secaucus will meet once promising heavyweight Michael Grant over twelve rounds with the winner likely receiving a title shot.

Dubbed as “The Big Challenge”, the 6’7 Grant, who was projected to be a world champion a number of years ago, will be Adamek’s tallest opponent to date. I had the opportunity to ask various members of the boxing world ranging from journalists, fighters and trainers for their thoughts on the bout. Here’s what they had to say.

Paul Marinaccio (Retired heavyweight who fought Grant/current boxing and MMA promoter)

“Grant only threw 5 to 8 jabs a round which gave me some opportunities during (our) fight. Adamek will need to work his way in and to keep stepping to the side. Grant hurt me three times with punches to back of the head then (landed) clean shots (but) couldn’t finish me. (He was) very tentative the whole fight. I’m the only guy to go 12 rounds with Grant and I had torn ligaments in my ankle. Adamek wins but (he can’t run).”

Chris Robinson (Journalist from Examiner.com)

“I remember running into Grant earlier this year at the IMMA gym in Las Vegas. One thing I can say is that he hasn't let himself slip and that he is still in excellent shape. Still, I really have no idea what he would have left at this point in his career. Things just never seemed the same for him after his crushing loss to Lennox Lewis

Adamek's rise to both the cruiserweight and heavyweight ranks has been impressive. After his loss to Chad Dawson years ago I really didn't know what he would come up with but he has shown a lot of perseverance in continuing to succeed against bigger man. I think he will find a way to defeat Grant and it will be interesting to see where he goes after that.”

Sean Sullivan (Editor-in-Chief Boxing Digest)

“Adamek should win with a mid-rounds stoppage. After a few rounds, he'll have figured out how to deal with Grant's size and reach advantages then will break him down physically. Grant will wilt from Adamek's pressure and his own inactivity.”

Gary Williams (Journalist from Fight News/Boxing Along The Beltway)

“I like Adamek in this one. I know Grant's the (bigger man), but I like the way Adamek has progressed from cruiser to heavy. I think he will stop Grant late.”

Lem Satterfield (Editor and Lead Writer of AOL Fanhouse)

“I would have to say that Adamek wins a track meet. I believe that he should be able to get in and out and as long as he doesn't stand and trade (he could) potentially stop Grant late, if not win a decision.”

Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillan (Middleweight Contender)

“I am going with Adamek. He’s been the busier fighter. I got him by KO.”

Alan Hopper (Director of Publicity for Don King Productions)

“I liked Tomasz Adamek best when (Don King Productions promoted) him at 175 pounds, especially when he used his jab more. I was surprised when he carried his punch to cruiserweight, and I was shocked to see him become an elite heavyweight contender. Bottom line: He's a fighter I admire with a lot of heart that you can never count out. Adamek by decision.”

Marc Abrams (Editor of 15rounds.com)

“I like Adamek to win the fight by late stoppage. He’s been more active lately against better competition. Adamek always shows heart and desire, which is one thing that has been questioned about for years. Plus he has fallen off the radar while Adamek has been fighting top competition”

Kevin Iole (Senior Boxing Writer for Yahoo Sports)

“I think its going to be a big win by Adamek. He has really turned into an elite fighter and is as good as anybody in the heavyweight division outside of the Klitschkos. His win over Arreola proved that. I think he is a very good and talented heavyweight in a division where there aren’t many good fighters out there. Grant will have to prove something. Ten years ago he was a fighter with the world of talent but when he stepped up he didn’t perform and I don’t think it will change against Adamek. I think Adamek gives him a boxing lesson and may stop him late, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he won by decision.”

Ryan Songalia (Journalist for Boxingscene.com)

“Adamek should win this fight pretty handily. He is pretty confident and has a string of good wins. The Arreola fight gave him a lot of credibility because his boxing ability and mobility helped him overcome a larger opponent. I would be shocked if Grant was able to win since his last loss (came via) devastating knockout to a small heavyweight like Adamek in Dominick Guinn. Grant’s size alone is not enough to overcome his opponents and this will be a major disadvantage for him. Adamek should stop him any time after the eighth round.”

Ryan Coyne (World Rated Cruiserweight Contender)

“I like Adamek. He is hungry and trying to move his way up the heavyweight ranks. He always steps up when he has a stiff test. Michael Grant is a mountain of a man but I think he is past his prime. The only time he really stepped up was against Lennox Lewis and Jameel McCline and he failed the test. His brief retirements, inactivity and what not will also hurt him come fight night. Adamek is taking this one by late stoppage.”

Aroz “Terrific” Gist (Trainer of local contenders including Mt. Arlington's Pawel Wolak and Hackensack's Bobby Gunn as well as unbeaten prospect Michael Angelo Perez of Newark)

I heard Michael Grant had a great camp. This is a fight you really have to pay attention to because Grant has the chance to pull an upset due to his height and reach. If it gets past round 6 or 7, I’d lean towards Michael Grant. With that said Adamek has been fighting high quality opponents and beating them handily. He’s a very talented fighter who always comes in shape so I am going with Adamek by seventh round stoppage, but if it goes past that, watch out for Grant!”

Brad Cooney (Owner 8CountNews.Com/Published Boxing Author)

Adamek is getting tougher and tougher to rule against. He did very well against Estrada and Golota. I don't think Michael Grant has been busy enough so I think Adamek will box him. Adamek has to be cautious because Grant has size and power. I expect him to use his quickness and ring smarts to box and win a decision."

Judah to fight Clark at The Prudential Center October 2!

Dan Rafael of Espn.com is reporting that former Junior Welterweight and Welterweight champion Zab "Super Judah" Judah will take on Michael Clark on October 2nd at the Prudential Ccenter in Newark.

“I know he’s coming to win,” Judah told ESPN.com on Monday from Las Vegas, where he’s training with Eddie Mustafa Muhammad. “I’m just excited. I’m back in training. Me and Eddie have been in the gym putting in the work. I am looking to go in there and show the world that I am back and that I am the best 140-pounder in the world.”

“I felt great in the Santa Cruz fight,” Judah said. “For this fight here, I will come in at 140. I’m feeling good. Whenever I step in the ring, it will always be an exciting night. I’m making a promise that it will be a dynamic performance. I am mentally and physically ready.”

“With the performances of Bradley and Alexander [in their recent fights], I consider myself the best guy in the division,” Judah said. “Those guys know with me back at 140 that my eyes are set on them, Devon, Bradley and Khan. I don’t know when or which order they will be taken in, but there will be order in the court. I am looking to be undisputed champion at 140 pounds.”

“We offered the fight to Juan Urango, Victor Cayo, Paulie Malignaggi, Lucas Matthysse, Julio Diaz, Kendall Holt and Joel Casamayor,” Said Main Events promoter Kathy Duva. “None of them were interested.”

“HBO knows we are willing to fight any of them, but I was told the only way I was going to get Zab on HBO was to fight on one of Golden Boy’s dates since they have the dates and they have most of those fighters,” Duva said.

“Zab came down from welterweight because he had been fighting in a division he was too small for for a long time and he isn’t going to make that mistake again,” Duva said. “I told Lou (DiBella) if Berto wants to come down to 140, we can make the fight right now. But that isn’t something he’s interested in, which is fine. But we are not going to wait until these guys are willing to fight Zab. We went after just about everyone in the top 10, so it’s frustrating. So we give Michael Clark a lot of credit because he’s willing to fight Zab. He should be given credit. People want to fight Zab at 147, but not at 140, so that’s where we are.”

“Zab needs to just keep putting together wins like he did in July with the idea to get a fight against one of the big guys in the division and eventually his marketability will trump their reticence to fight him,” said Duva, who added that television plans for the Oct. 2 card were in the works. “Outside guys who have belts, he’s the best in the division and we’d like guys to fight him. That’s what this is supposed to be about, fighting the best fights, not looking for an easy fight.”

Garden State Round Up: Tapia to Vegas September 11, Rodrigues Returns October 2, 2000 Olympian Singh Prepares for Ibragimov!

According to Promoter John Lynch of Pound 4 Pound Promotions, Passaic's Glen Tapia will return to the ring September 11 against rugged Edvan Barros at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, NV.

Tapia, 7-0 (5 KO's), is amongst the most entertaining fighters in the Garden State, bringing the heat each and every time he enters the squared circle. Tapia, who was one of Joshua Clottey's main sparring partners leading up to his fight against Miguel Cotto, stopped Nick Runningbear in two rounds on June 12.

Barros should serve as a familiar name to local fight fans, having lost a competitive eight round decision to Newark's Alex Perez July 16 at the Prudential Center. At 10-10-1 (7 KO's), the Florida based Brazilian is far tougher than his record indicates.

“This will be a good step up for me and it’s going to be a great show”, said Tapia, who will fight Barros at a 150 lb catchweight. “I know that he comes to fight, so when I beat this guy, it will be a statement that I am here to stay and will be a world champion.”

Tapia meets Barros over six rounds. The fight will take place on the untelevised portion of the Anthony Peterson-Brandon Rios, Yuriorkis Gamboa-Orlando Salido HBO aired doubleheader.

Rodrigues Ready to Return!

Vineland based Brazilian Isaac Rodrigues is slated to return to the squared circle Saturday, October 2 at the Turning Stole Resort & Casino in Verona, NY against Colombian banger Samuel Miller (20-4, 17 KO’s).

Miller, a poor mans version of countryman Edison Miranda, was defeated each time he stepped up in competition. Currently based out of La Habra, CA, Miller has never been stopped, most recently losing a decision to former world title challenger Marco Antonio Rubio in June.

Rodrigues, 17-0 (13 KO’s), has been out of the ring with a hand injury since defeating rugged Brian Vera by majority decision in February. The hard hitting 25 year old returned to the gym in July and could end up in a notable bout with a few more victories.

According to his manager Marie Suarez, Rodriguez and Miller will meet for the WBC/USNBC Middleweight title.

“We are excited to get him back in the ring”, said Suarez, the wife of late trainer Oscar Suarez. “We are most glad that he had the time to heal and Oscar always told me that a fighter’s health must come first, so I always keep that in the forefront of my mind.”

The card is being promoted by Dave Escalet’s Fistacuff Productions.

Singh Preparing for Title Bout with Ibragimov!

2000 Indian Olympian Guru Singh is back in the Garden State to prepare for his August 24 WBO Inter-Continental Heavyweight title bout at the Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood, FL against Timor Ibragimov.

Singh, who was born in India and is based in AC, has been inactive since March 2009, winning his last two bouts by decision in the United Kingdom. As an Indian heavyweight, Singh is definitely one of a kind, but his ability on a world class level will be tested for the first time on the 24th.

Ibragimov, 28-2-1 (15 KO’s), won the NABA heavyweight crown in June with a decision over former world champions Oliver McCall, and also defeated former heavyweight contender Timo Hoffman. Ibragimov was considered a notable heavyweight prospect before suffering back to back defeats to Calvin Brock and Tony Thompson.

To prepare for Ibragimov, Singh is picking up his training at Forked River’s Gladiator Gym, where he will work with standout amateurs Bobby “The Bull” McCarty as well as Danny Halligan and Rob Walder.

According to gym owner Shawn Darling, training sessions are open to the public. More information is available by calling 732-581-3766.

Michael Grant and Eddie Mustafa Muhammad Speak on Adamek Fight!

By John Wall

On August 21, Newark's Prudential Center hosts “The Big Challenge“. The Main event features adopted son of Jersey City Tomasz Adamek, 41-1 (27 KO's), versus former title contender "Big" Michael Grant. Grant, 46-3 (34 KO's), is trained by legendary Eddie Mustafa Muhammad; the same trainer who guided Chad Dawson to victory over Tomasz Adamek, dealing Adamek the only loss on his pro record.

Michael and Eddie took time out from training camp in Las Vegas to speak to Garden State Fight Scene about the fight.

John Wall: This is the biggest fight of your career since your loss to Lennox Lewis what are your thoughts?

Michael Grant: A loss can be a chance to gain experience. I was young I had talent and was put on a pedestal but I was not ready.

JW: It's been a long time since you have been in the ring with a contender.

MG: I have been working hard. I feel fresh, experience is everything my three losses were a learning experience. This is a great opportunity. I have a hell of a trainer, and great camp. This is very important to me and my family and I’ve done my hardest training since the Lennox Lewis fight.

JW:How has Eddie Mustafa Muhammad changed your style?

MG: No changes, he as added to my own style . Nice guy an old school trainer

JW: Why the long layoff between fights?

MG: A lot of changes . I changed promoters, managers, and I moved.I used to be to concerned about the politics of boxing. No more.

JW:Eddie, were would you rank Michael among heavyweight contenders?

Eddie Mustafa Muhammad: I would put Michael among the top 5 contenders. I don’t see Michael as an underdog and I think Main Events committed a grave error. They wanted somebody easy, a guy who will not pose any threat to their fighter. Michael is not one of those guys.

JW:How have you trained differently for this fight?

MG: The biggest difference is my conditioning. We added high altitude training. every morning I run 5 mile up Mt Charleston here in Nevada, 8740 feet in altitude.

Wolak-Chavez Finalized for September 11 in Mexico!

According to Kurt Wolfheimer of Fightnews.com, the fight between Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. ,41-0-1 (30 KO's), and Mount Arlington's Pawel Wolak is set for September 11 in Queretaro, Mexico.

“We are excited about the opportunity to fight a recognized fighter like Julio Cesar Chavez Jr,” said Wolak’s Manager and Advisor, Ivan Edwards. “Wolak is looking to bring his own brand of excitement. He is a dangerous fighter in his own right and is ready for battle.”

A Chavez Jr. victory may very well land him a bout with WBA Junior Middleweight Champion Miguel Cotto, but Wolak’s camp has other plans in mind.

“We are not taking this fight to be Chavez’s stepping stone, stated Edwards. “If Julio thinks he is getting an easy fight, he is mistaken.

Nicknamed “The Raging Bull,” Wolak 27-1 (17 KO's), brings an aggressive in your face style, which should present quite a challenge for the undefeated Mexican superstar.

“I am going into Mexico to make a statement and beat him convincingly,” said Wolak. “I would like to thank Top Rank for the opportunity of a lifetime. I am going to be in the best shape of my life and will be victorious on September 11th.”

Fox Sports Espanol will televise the bout.

Universal Promotions to sue over Lazarte-Espinoza bout!

Nelson Fernandez, manager of North Bergen based former IBF Junior Flyweight champion Carlos Tamara, informed GSFS that Universal Promotions is suing current champion Luis Lazarte and his his Promoter Osvaldo Rivero over their disregard of Tamara's rematch clause.

Tamara was slated to face Lazarte September 4 in Argentina, but will now take on Nerys Espinoza on that very same date. Lazarte, who won the title by split decision in May, was contractually obligated for a rematch, which is standard when the champion loses his title.

"We had a date for the fight and (Lazarte's promoter) tried telling us that the people putting up the money weren't available", said Fernandez. "It was a bunch of bull s*** and now they won't answer any phone calls or emails now."

Fernandez also said that everything was agreed to and there was no issue over the fight date or venue.

"The bottom line is that there is a written agreement between Lazarte, Rivero, Tamara and Universal Promotions for a rematch and they aren't abiding by it." "Our team is doing everything in our power to block the fight from September 4th from happening."

Tamara, a 2004 Colombian Olympian, won the title in January 09' with a dramatic come from behind stoppage over Brian Viloria and had been preparing for the rematch. In the mean time, Fernandez is fielding offers for Tamara to battle other top fighters at 108 and 112 lbs.

Tomasz Adamek Training Camp Quotes!

Tomasz Adamek - "I am ready to fight! We are training hard 9 weeks, this week is 10. I am ready for a great fight, a tough fight."

About training with Roger Bloodworth: "Every day I am a little better. He is a good teacher. I want to be heavyweight champion with him. He is teaching me more movement. More US style boxing. I am happy. I'm learning now, I'm preparing."

"The style in Europe is more straight. Small movements. United States style is maybe more difficult and because of the movement it's difficult to catch someone. It's good for me because I can fight longer than a European fighter. I am strong."

About rumors that David Haye turned down a 50/50 fight with Klitschko: "You know, if I'm proposed 50/50, I might sign a contract today!"

"I love tough fights because people remember them for a long time. I want to be champion and I would like to fight great fights."

When people watch you on August 21st what can fans expect?: " You know, I win! I'm a warrior. I'm going to win this fight and next fight, and next fight... I'm going to be champion. It's my dream. I've been two times champion, my dream is to be champion in three categories. First guy to do it."

Roger Bloodworth - "The difference between Toamsz Adamek now and Tomasz Adamek when he was training for Arreola is that he is in an environment where he is completely happy. It's relaxing, it's family, its hard training - tough boxing, its growth." Bloodworth added, "He loves his family, so I think he's a lot happier here. Basically it's everything he holds dear. When you add in all that he is learning and absorbing in camp, well that's a package that's hard to beat. That says a lot for a boxer's frame of mind. He's relaxed, confident; sure he's going to win. There is no fear in Tomasz. I like what I see. He's confident that he is going to win. I believe it!'

"I think his technique is a lot better in this camp. We've had a little more time together so I think his technique has improved a lot. He's a terrific student. I think you have to grow into being a heavyweight and I think he's adjusted very well."

"How do I see the fight going? I think it depends on what Grant brings to the fight. He can come in one of a couple ways. He can come in trying to move; he can come in trying to run over him; or he can just stand in the middle and try to pick him off. So one of those three scenarios will be played out on the 21st, and we have thoroughly prepared for each one of them. We're preparing for everything because you never know. I mean you can watch films of a guy, and of course I haven't seen any recent films of the guy, but anything can happen. He's a big guy, he's a formidable opponent. He's got a long reach, a good jab and a good right hand. Plus I know this fight means a lot to him so I expect him to be in great shape. That's what we have prepared Tomasz for. That's what Tomasz IS ready for. I expect a great fight."

"Right now, we have been sparring about 6 rounds per session each time we spar. We're working with sparring partners that are both very much the stature of Grant. Size will not be a problem for Tomasz."

The "Brick City Boxing Series" card will take place at Prudential Center, Newark, NJ, and is promoted by Main Events and Ziggy Promotions in association with X-Cel Worldwide.

Tickets priced at $53, $78, and $253 (ringside) can be purchased at Prudential Center Box Office, by calling TicketMaster at 800-745-3000 or www.Prucenter.com

The fight is being distributed in North America by Integrated Sports Media for live viewing at 9PM EST / 6PM PST on both cable and satellite pay-per-view via iN Demand, DIRECTV, Avail-TVN and DISH Network in the United States and Viewer's Choice and Bell TV in Canada for a suggested retail price of only $29.95.

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ (August 2, 2010)—On Saturday night, August 28th, Spartan Fight Promotions will present Battle I at the beautiful Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City with a terrific main event that will pit Heavyweight contender Chazz “The Gentleman” Witherspoon battling rough veteran Livin Castillo in a tough heavyweight bout scheduled for ten rounds.

Witherpsoon has a record of 26-2 with eighteen knockouts and is regarded as one of the top American Heavyweights.

When asked about fighting Castillo, Witherspoon responded “I am excited about getting back in the ring. It’s going to be an entertaining action packed affair because I know he comes to fight and I know I am coming to fight and I look forward to fighting back in Atlantic City.”

Witherspoon, twenty-eight years old of Philadelphia, PA, won his first twenty-three bouts with fifteen knockouts as he defeated the likes of Michael Alexander (11-0); Talmadge Giffis (24-6-3); Jonathan Haggler (18-1); which set up a big showdown with fellow undefeated and rising star Chris Arreola (23-0)

On June 21, 2008 Arreola scored a third round disqualification win in a fight that Witherspoon boxed well but decided “To bring out the Philly in him” and slug with the heavy handed Arreola.

Witherspoon went on to win three consecutive starts which included an eighth round stoppage over Adam “Swamp Donkey” Richards (21-1) on the undercard of the Jermain Taylor – Jeff Lacy battle in Memphis, Tennessee.

In his last bout, Witherspoon engaged in a slugfest with former world title challenger Tony Thompson on the Paul Williams – Sergio Martinez undercard on December 5th at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

Castillo of Borbon, Ecudor is known as a crafty veteran who will take on all comers.

Castillo scored a victory over Osborne Machimana (10-2) then lost to currant IBF #1 ranked contender Alexander Povetkin in Hanover, Germany.

After a victory, the murder’s row of opponents continued as Castillo lost three in a row to former WBA Heavyweight champion, Bruce Seldon (37-6); former World title challenger Eddie Chambers (31-1) and rising prospect Travis Kauffman (16-0).

In his last bout, the thirty-four year old southpaw scored an eight round unanimous decision over Jamie Quinonez in Quito, Ecuador on October 16th, 2009.

An exciting undercard is being put together that will feature Lightweight contender Jose Reyes (23-7, 8 KO’s) of Vineland, NJ; Super Middleweight Joel De La Paz (5-0, 4 KO’s) of Atlantic City; Light Heavyweight Lavarn “Baby Bowe” Harvell (5-0, 2 KO’s) of Atlantic City ; Bantamweight Qa’id “Kid Dynamite” Muhammad (5-0, 5 KO’s); Super Middleweight Eugene Soto (2-0, 1 KO) of Atlantic City .

“This is going to be an action packed evening of boxing”, said Mike Brestle, President & CEO of Spartan Fight Promotions.

“When you have a well rounded card that features one of the best American heavyweights in Chazz Witherspoon plus a guy like Jose Reyes who is looking to get back in the mix at lightweight and then add a handful of undefeated prospects we are proud to present what will surely be a great night of boxing. As we said in our mission statement, we are looking to bring back boxing to Atlantic City much like it was in the golden era down here some years ago , I think this card is a good start. We are showcasing a combination of world class contenders and bright prospects. The action is sure to explosive!”

Bowman Stops Acevedo in Three!

Union City's Roberto Acevedo was stopped in the third round this past Saturday by local favorite Carney Bowman at Sovereign Bank Stadium in York, Pennsylvania.

The bout was reportedly foul filled and Acevedo was docked a point for holding. Bowman, who was frustrated with the tactics, took the second round before knocking out Acevedo with a right hand at 0:47. Acevedo had harsh feelings following the bout and a riot nearly took place after the bout when Bowman tried shaking his hand shortly thereafter.

The well regarded Bowman is now 15-0 with 7 kayos. Acevedo falls to 9-11-3 (1) with the defeat.
