Although North Bergen residents Jonathan Maicelo, Carlos Zambrano and Juan Zegarra are not well known locally, the trio is larger than life in their native Peru. The three are slated to fight Saturday night at Coliseo Niño Heroe Manuel Bonilla in Lima, Peru before a sellout crowd. According to their manager Nelson Fernandez, the national media blitz is beyond boxing's norms within the United States.
Zambrano, Zegarra and Maicelo have appeared on virtually every notable TV in Peru leading up to the fight, and reportedly 120 media credentials were issued for media.
Zambrano, one of the best young boxers in the Garden State and Zegarra have each fought locally, while Maicelo, Peru's most beloved son, began training in the US last month.
