Zambrano, Maicelo score first round KO's, Zegarra cut short in no contest

North Bergen based and Peruvian national heroes Jonathan Maicelo and Carlos "Mina" Zambrano remained perfect last night after scoring easy stoppages at Coliseo Niño Heroe Manuel Bonilla in Lima, Peru. Juan "JZ" Zegarra, also of North Bergen, was held to a controversial no contest.

Maicelo retained his WBC Latino Lightweight title just 1:08 into his bout with Colombian Victor Julio Salgado. A double left hook to the head put Salgado down for the count. Maicelo improves to 12-0 (8 KO's), while Salgado slides 18-13-1 (15 KO's)

Zambrano, one of the top prospects in Jersey, got rid of Oscar Carrillo Villa of Colombia with a jab right hook combo. Villa was reportedly out cold before he hit the canvas. Zambrano, a slick boxing featherweight, is now 10-0 (4 KO's). Villa falls to 15-8 (5 KO's).

Zegarra, a muscular 140 lb prospect, controversially suffered the first blemish on his record after a clash of heads with Hector Medina ended his night before it even started. Medina headbutted Zegarra early in the first round, and was badly cut over his eye. Zegarra became infuriated following Medina's dirty tactics and was gunning for a knockout, but the reefree consulted with the ringside doctor, who said the bout had to be stopped. Team Zegarra insisted that their fighter would have ended the fight seconds later had there not been a headbutt.

Holt upset by Mabuza, Maxwell, Duran and Tapia win in AC!

By Marc Abrams in association with 15rounds.com

The opening bout of the night could have been the end of the line for former WBO Jr. Welterweight champion and Paterson native Kendall Holt, as Kaiser Mabuza bludgeoned him over six of their scheduled twelve round IBF Jr. Welterweight elimination bout.

Holt actually had a decent first round as he landed some body shots and combinations. After that it was a downhill free-fall for Holt, as Mabuza would just walk Holt down and pound away on the ropes for the next five rounds. Holt began to bleed from the nose in round three. If one saw round two, then he saw all rounds after that as Holt did next to nothing basically let Mabuza have his way. The sixth round was a bad round for Holt as he spent nearly the whole round eating punches and swelling around the left eye was starting to form.

Holt’s corner decided to save their man from any more damage and called a halt to the action before round seven could commence.

Mabuza, 140 lbs of Johannesburg, South Africa now awaits the winner of next Saturday’s Juan Urango – Devon Alexander unification battle with a record of 23-6-3 with fourteen knockouts. Holt, 139 ½, is now 25-4.

Good looking nineteen year-old prospect Glen Tapia of Passaic scored a vicious knockdown just seconds into his scheduled four round Jr. Middleweight bout with Tyrone Miles and finished him off with a series of power punches that forced Esteves to stop bout just one minute after the opening bell.

Tapia, 152 lbs, is now 4-0 with three knockouts. Camden’s Miles, 153, drops to 1-3. Tapia has looked solid in all four of his professional bouts and is worth keeping an eye on.

Local favorite (and GSFS/15rounds.com blogger) Troy Maxwell made his large local throng of fans happy by scoring a four round unanimous decision over Todd Erkisson in a Super Middleweight bout.

Maxwell landed some big right hands and kept Eriksson at bay to cruise to the decision via 39-37 on all cards.

Maxwell, 168 lbs of Galloway is now 2-0. The Dover based Eriksson, 166 ½, remains winless at 0-3-1.

Rugged Paterson based veteran, Ossie Duran scored a four round unanimous decision over Jamaal Davis in a Jr. Middleweight bout that was cut from a six rounder at the last minute due to time constraints.

Scores were 40-36 on all cards for Duran, 155 lbs, who is now 24-8-2. Davis, 156 ½ lbs of Philadelphia slips 11-6.

In the televised main event, Mike Jones got off to a bit of a slow start but turned up the offense to cruise to a unanimous decision over Henry Brusles in a ten round Welterweight fight in front of a sold out crowd at Ballys in Atlantic City.

It was Bruseles who came out and boxed well in round one as he moved in and out and landed a couple shots to Jones’ 5’11” body. Jones started to get things going a little bit in round two when Jones started to land some quick shots inside. Over the next couple rounds, each man took turns controlling the action with Jones winning his round with the more emphatic punching while Bruseles would squeak by with by getting through using angles and pot shotting.

The fight clearly turned in round seven with Jones landing some quick lefts and then rocking Bruseles with a hard three punch combination. Over the final part of the fight, Jones was in control as he started pumping the jab two and three times to set up quick one-two combinations and he began to pull away on the cards. Jones was very solid in the fight but probably wasn’t the dominating performance that many of the sold out crowd came to see.

Nonetheless, Jones won by scores of 98-92, 98-92 and 97-93 (the same way we had it).

Jones, 146 ¾ lbs of Philadelphia is now 20-0. Bruseles, 147 lbs of Guarbo, Puerto Rico is now 28-4-1.

In the co-feature, Gabriel Rosado and Saul Roman hooked up in an entertaining ten round Jr. Middleweight clash.

Rosado and Roman fought very hard with Roman coming forward for most of the bout and Rosado doing a tremendous job of countering with the right hand.

The action really picked up over the last half of the fight with Rosado firing off right hands that caused a stream of blood from around the left eye of Roman. For his trouble, Rosado was cut from the forehead. This was a battle of geography as Roman wanted to make this an inside tussle while Rosado wanted and most of the time successfully had his way at distance. In round eight, Rosado landed countless counters to offset a big left hand that Roman got through at the beginning of the round.

The last two rounds did not provide as much action as the previous entertaining eight frames but Rosado’s out was more than enough for Rosado who won the bout by split decision.

Scores were 96-94 on two cards for Rosado (we had the counter punching Rosado up 99-91) while a third card read 97-93 for Roman.

Rosado, 155 ½ lbs of Philadelphia is now 14-4. Roman, 155 lbs of Tijuana, Mexico is now 32-6.

Ariel Espinal landed two big rights in round three to drop Anthony Pietrantonio and in round four Espinal finished the job by landing four big head shots that forced referee Benji Estevez to call a halt to the action at 1:38 of round four of their scheduled six round Light Heavyweight bout.

Espinal, 181 lbs of Brooklyn, NY is now 7-12-3 with three knockouts. Pietrantonio, 171 lbs of Youngstown, OH is now 6-5.

Media Blitz For North Jerseyans in Peru!

Although North Bergen residents Jonathan Maicelo, Carlos Zambrano and Juan Zegarra are not well known locally, the trio is larger than life in their native Peru. The three are slated to fight Saturday night at Coliseo Niño Heroe Manuel Bonilla in Lima, Peru before a sellout crowd. According to their manager Nelson Fernandez, the national media blitz is beyond boxing's norms within the United States.

Zambrano, Zegarra and Maicelo have appeared on virtually every notable TV in Peru leading up to the fight, and reportedly 120 media credentials were issued for media.

Zambrano, one of the best young boxers in the Garden State and Zegarra have each fought locally, while Maicelo, Peru's most beloved son, began training in the US last month.

Troy Maxwell Final Training Blog!

It’s Thursday now, 2 days to the fight. I can honestly say I am in the best shape I’ve ever been in for a fight thus far in my life. I am already on weight! You know someone recently asked me, what’s the difference from fighting in MMA? Why did you start boxing? See in MMA I fought because I wanted to open my own gym eventually, and needed the experience. I never really saw it as a way to make a living or a future. It didn’t matter what the outcome was I just had fun. That’s the difference I guess in boxing. I can see a future; there is something at the end of the finish line. I like that in boxing every fight counts. There is no option but to win.

Since I started boxing one year ago, people have got behind me in a strong way. I am building a huge fan base and most of my MMA fans have followed me out of the cage and through the ropes. I can’t wait till Saturday; anticipation is already boiling in my blood. I truly love to fight, and I love the pressure it puts on you. I love the way the fans come alive with emotion. South Jersey has been great to me since moving down here. I grew up in Perry County, Pennsylvania and after my time in the Coast Guard I stayed down here to train. It’s been six years and a blast and it’s my home away from home.

I have recently got my first sponsor in Maxwell Construction. This is a huge deal for me as I grew up around men working hard to earn a living. I admire how hard these guys who go out and brave the elements all day and sometimes half the night to put food on the table. I reflect often when feeling tired at the gym about my Pop working constantly just to keep the lights on when I was a kid. So when my trainers say,” Troy that’s enough you workout too much” in my mind I think about it and say not as hard as these guys. So it’s great to be able to represent a company like Maxwell construction. They have been great to me and have really helped with training expenses, not to mention the names kind of catchy.

So Saturday night is 2 days away and we just put the finishing touches on my training. The hard stuff is done. Next comes the fun part we get to go in there and throw some punches. All I can say is I guarantee you’ll see , “My trainers teach me how to box with skill, and where I grew up taught me how to fight with will, so come out and you’ll be in for a thrill”.

Troy Maxwell takes on Stanhope's Todd Eriksson Saturday night at Bally's in Atlantic City in a four round light heavyweight contest.

Gunn-Ali Off!

This Saturday's bout between Rochelle Park's Bobby "The Celtic Warrior" Gunn (21-4-1 18 KO's) and Nigerian Bash Ali has been canned due to multiple difficulties. The bout, which was to be promoted by the Nigerian government, was initially scheduled for December.

Many doubted that the bout would ever take place due to the fact that Ali tuns 54 on Saturday and in addition to not fighting since August 2004, but Gunn was set on taking it due to a handsome payday. Gunn, who made a name amongst locals for his brave performance last July against Seacaucus' Tomasz Adamek, now has his sights set on landing a bout with unbeaten Ran Nakash later in the year.

Chris Murphy Retires!

Sparta based junior middleweight Chris Murphy, 3-0-1 3 KO's, notified GSFS that he is retiring due to a reoccurring retina injury. Murphy first hurt his eye three years ago and after multiple surgeries, re injured it sparring with contender Alfredo Angulo a few months back.

Murphy, a pressure fighter who loved to brawl, will remembered among most locals for his scintillating four round draw with Abe Torres, which will likely go down as one of the most entertaining club show fights in North Jersey history.

"I am blessed because I have a year left in school and aspirations to get a higher degree when I am done with that" said Murphy, a student at Sussex County College who also played professional hockey. "I am looking to follow in my brother's footsteps (who graduates from Georgetown law in the spring)."

Although he will no longer be fighting, Murphy vows to support his stablemates as they develop.

"Glen Tapia, Jeremy Bryan, (Bobby) Rooney, Jorge Diaz, Pat Farrell, Danny McDermott and the rest of Pound 4 Pound (promotions) are my family for life. It was great to work with them as well as trainer Mike Skowronski."

GSFS wishes Murphy the best of luck in his future outside of boxing.

HARRIS-MATTHYSSE VIDEO!

Vivian Harris sent us a video of the 3rd and 4th round (where the controversial stoppage came). As previously noted, Harris and Matthysse will reportedly meet in a rematch April 2 on Shobox.

HARRIS-MATTHYSSE REMATCH????

Sources notified GSFS that Carlstadt's Vivian Harris, (29-4-1 19 KO's), will be granted a rematch with Lucas Matthysse April 2 on ShoBox due to a controversial stoppage. We were unable to find footage of the bout, but multiple media sources reported that Harris' night was cut short after taking a right hand in the fourth round.

"He threw two punches, I blocked them and the referee stopped it", Harris angrily told us. "The whole crowd was booing and you will all see (that the ending was a joke) when it is on youtube. This guy used to getting people out of there early and that wasn't happening against me!"

With many still insisting that he retire, Harris is excited about getting back on track in the rematch.

"I am going to try and get him out of there early next time. I have to throw more punches in the first few rounds in the rematch."

Team Harris claims that Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya and Matchmaker Eric Gomez personally mandated a rematch immedately following the fight. They are also hoping for the official result to be changed to a no contest.

Harris stopped by Matthysse in Mexico

Carlstadt's Vivian Harris was stopped in the fourth round by unbeaten power puncher Lucas Matthysse tonight in Mexico. Harris was in dire need of a victory, but was unable to overcome his dynamite fisted opponent. Harris drops to 29-4-1 (19 KO's) and retirement appears as a likely option.

Adamek-Arreola Quotes!

DAN GOOSSEN (Promoter): “During the time that we’ve been talking about this fight, prior to Adamek’s fight with (Jason) Estrada, we were getting emails; we were getting messages; we were getting those phone calls ‘Where’s the fight going to be’? I mean Excitement! Excitement! Excitement!”

DAN GOOSSEN: “And then once we announced we were having this press conference here Friday, it just poured in all of a sudden because of the anticipation of seeing these two great fighters in the ring together. A lot of respect that these guys show for one another for getting in the ring with each other because they know each other is going to come with everything they’ve got, and they’re both very qualified heavyweights. It’s going to be a great, great, great fight. There’s no way it’s not going to be.”

KATHY DUVA (Co-Promoter): When it became clear the fight was going to be happening here, in some respects I’m kind of happy because I think what people may not recognize is that the Polish community in the United States is huge. And there are many, many Polish people out here on the West Coast. Tomasz, to these people, is a rock star. They’re going to come out to see him. There’s going to be a lot more red and white in the arena than you’d think.”

KATHY DUVA: “You’re going to see both of them giving 1,000 percent. One thing I can say is that anybody who watches this fight on April 24th is going to be happy they did, and anybody that didn’t is going to be kicking themselves the next day.

CHRIS ARREOLA: “The first time I fought here it was a great environment. It’s close to home, so I can’t be late. I don’t like to fight; I LOVE to fight! I love hitting people; that’s my passion. Me and Thomas Adamek on April 24th are gonna go in there and beat the crap out of each other. I’m gonna try and knock his head off and he’s gonna go in there and try and knock my head off. I believe it can be a great fight. I respect him as a fighter; I respect him as a man. But, come April 24th I’m gonna come out of there with my hand raised.

CHRIS ARREOLA: “It’s a boxing fight, man; it’s a chess match. He’s gonna try to catch me; I’m gonna try to catch him. I’m gonna find some openings, just like he’s gonna find some openings. But I believe my punches are more effective than his. I’m a natural heavyweight. I became a heavyweight because of Coronas and burritos. That’s the truth. But I’ve been a heavyweight for 29 fights. That’s the way I see it.”

TOMASZ ADAMEK: “Every fight there is a different guy, so you cannot judge me on whatever I did to Estrada or Andrew Golota. Obviously, we’ll have a special idea for Chris. I always believe the best tactic is to think more in the ring and fight in a way the other guy doesn’t have an answer for it.”

TOMASZ ADAMEK: “You have to be ready for a great fight. I always believe you’re always good when the people cheer you when people believe every time you go in the ring they are going to see something special. So this is my credo. This is something I live by. Every time I going into the ring, it should be something memorable. Every next fight should be an even better fight. So, the 24th of April will be my best fight ever.”

CHRIS ARREOLA: “I wanna come in at 240. 240 is easy; that’s my target weight. That’s where I really do belong. In boxing any higher than that and I’m kicking myself in the ass. There is no excuse why I shouldn’t come in at that weight. Thomasz comes up from cruiserweight and he fights at around 225. And he’s a very agile guy; he’s gonna be on his toes a lot. So, I’m gonna have to try and keep up with him because I’m gonna have to chase him.”

THOMASZ ADAMEK: “It was all about the fans (in facing Arreola in just his 3rd fight at heavyweight). Like I said before, I am fighting for the fans. Without fans there is no point in going into the ring. Having a guy like Chris Arreola, who goes forward and is relentless, and everybody knows me. I love to punch people in the mouth, there’s nothing wrong with this. I mean this guarantees a great fight, and this is a fight that HBO and the fans wanted for a long, long time. If I were to fight somebody boring there would be seven fans in the stands. No point.”

HENRY RAMIREZ (Arreola’s trainer): “Honestly, when I went to the Adamek-Estrada fight I was blown away with the reception and support he had. I hope we can duplicate that and even more for Chris here. I know I am excited and Chris is excited for this fight where the winner gets back in the title picture. Adamek is a proven fighter as far as a light heavyweight and cruiserweight, and we’ll find out what he’s about as a heavyweight on April 24th.”

HENRY RAMIREZ: “There’s no fear in fighting any big heavyweights, I just think that stylewise this is the fight that I think viewers at home and viewers in the arena will love. This kind of a fight there is no way this is going to be a boring fight.”

Harris Scales in at 143 lbs!

Carlstadt's "Vicious" Vivian Harris weighed in at 143 lbs for his Saturday night showdown against unbeaten power puncher Lucian Matthysse (25-0 23 KO's) in Mexico City. Harris, a former WBA Junior Welterweight title holder is in a must-win situation after struggling mightily during his most recent bouts.

The fight will be available on HBO Plus.

Jorge Diaz to fight unbeaten Alejandro Lopez March 20 on Fox Sports!

GSFS was notified by Pound 4 Pound Promotions that New Brunswick's Jorge "Kid" Diaz will make his National TV debut March 20 in Key West, Florida against slick boxing Mexican Alejandro Lopez (13-0 2 KO's).

Diaz, who sports a perfect 12-0 record with 8 by way of kayo, is considered the most exciting prospect in the Garden State and one of the best in the 122-126 lb divisions. His last two opponents failed to make it out of the opening round and last October, Diaz bust onto the scene after scoring a highlight reel knockout over 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist Yan Barthelemy. Naturally, Team Diaz is excited about the Fox Espanol showcasing.

"We think that Jorge is made for TV and would like to thank Top Rank for opportunity" said Diaz' trainer Mikey "Red" Skowronski. "He has been training hard in Passaic with some of the best fighters around and we are excited about (moving forward in) 2010"

Diaz and Lopez will meet over 8 rounds.

UPDATE: ADAMEK-ARREOLA OFFICIAL!

GSFS received a media alert about a press conference Friday in California to formally announce the match up between Adamek and Arreola April 24th at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, CA. The card will be known as "Ring of Fire". As perviosly mentioned, Adamek-Arreola will air on HBO as part of a doubleheader. Should be a good one!

Adamek-Arreola in California?

Multiple sources have confirmed a deal for Secaucus’ Tomasz Adamek to battle contender Cris Arreola April 24 on HBO is virtually finished and the two will meet at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, CA.

GSFS spoke with Arreola’s trainer Henry Ramirez and Adamek’s Promoter Kathy Duva of Main Events a few weeks back regarding the potential issue over logistics. Ramirez was adamant about having the fight happen in California, Arreola’s home state, while Duva wanted it to take place at the Prudential Center in Newark, but was willing to negotiate location.

If the bout does get finalized as expected, the hard hitting Arreola (28-1 25 KO’s) will be Adamek’s toughest opponent since entering the heavyweight division. The victor will likely receive a title shot.

Douglin in Camp with Deandre Latimore!

Morganville's Denis "Mommas Boy" Douglin simply doesn't believe in time away from boxing. Just 24 hours after his six round unanimous decision victory over Eddie Hunter in Newark, Douglin flew to St. Louis to serve as a lead sparring partner for junior middleweight contender Deandre Latimore. Even though the 2008 National Golden Gloves Champion didn't get a chance to soak in the victory, he is thankful for the opportunity to work with one of the better fighters in the 154 lb division.

"It feels great to be able to spar with somebody as experienced as Latimore and hold my own", said Douglin. "I think his team has been impressed thus far."

Latimore meets New York's Sechew Powell in a rematch of their 2008 fight on March 19. Team Douglin expects to announce their next move shortly.

Troy Maxwell Training Blog!

Training is going great every day starts at 6:30 am. I get up get my stuff together and head out the door to meet the other fighters at All N Conditioning (Virgil Hill’s gym) for road work after. After that we typically do some more conditioning on the boardwalk in AC, maybe some sprints what ever Coach Virgil has in store for us. That's the cool thing about training with him we never no what we are going to be doing.

The only thing you know that if you are training with him is you’ll be in shape. After my morning workout, I get a little break where I attempt to finish my homework and what not before heading back to the gym at 3 for boxing. This cycle is repeated everyday unless I gotta shoot to school in between workouts.

The training for my upcoming fight (February 27th in AC against fellow New Jerseyan Todd Eriksson) has been the best I’ve ever had. I am finally 100% healthy! We have been training really hard my cardio is unbelievable. The dedication is there as well. Even Saturday in the snow storm I made it to the gym. My car literally couldn't move, so I bundled up and jogged to All N Conditioning just to train.

Boxing wise, this is also the best I have ever been. Virgil and Mike Hall are wizards when you put them together in the corner! I couldn't ask for better sparring either. I have been working with Native American sensation Shawn Hawk (20-1). He's new to Jersey and I have learned a lot by working with him. John “The Eastern Beast” Brown is always around to show me some tricks, he even gets in sparring sessions when he’s training for an upcoming fight. I always make sure to get out of the gym to sparring elsewhere once a week at least so I have a lot of different looks in front of me, as most 4 round fighters don't have any footage out there.

We are 17 days out from the fight and I am feeling great! These last few weeks of killer (and somewhat unpredictable) training will really put my body to the test. I am lucky to be blessed with world class training and world class team, so I am ready to get to get this started! Can’t wait until fight night.

Troy Maxwell is a 1-0 light heavyweight from Galloway. His fight is featured on the off-tv portion of the Fox Sports en Espanol card headlined by Paterson’s Kendall Holt.

KENDALL HOLT PRIMED TO MAKE RING RETURN 2/27 IN ATLANTIC CITY

By Brandon Estrict

After a disappointing ending to his unification bout with Timothy Bradley last April, Kendall “Rated R” Holt may finally be in position to force a championship sequel. The former WBO junior welterweight kingpin lost his title in a unification bout against the then WBC belt holder, shattering his dreams of becoming the first unified 140 lb champion in four years.

The fight was not without its NC-17 moments however, as Rated R nearly ended the bout spectacularly in the opening round, literally knocking Bradley off his feet with a perfect counter left-hook. Following the knockdown, Bradley was able to get back on track and generally outwork Holt, before the Paterson native decked him in the final round. Unfortunately, it was too little too late, as Bradley’s consistent workrate helped him overcome the knockdowns en route to claiming a unanimous decision.

That was nearly one calendar year ago, yet Holt, 25-3 (13 KO’s), still hasn’t been given the opportunity to atone for that defeat. Until now that is.

Holt will meet South African Kaizer Mabuza, 22-6-3 (13 KO’s), Saturday, February 27, at Bally’s in Atlantic City to determine the number one contender to IBF champion Juan Urango. The bout will be Kendall’s first since facing Bradley.

Team Holt knows what this bout means to the future of their charge. Holt, the world’s number 7 rated junior welterweight according to The Ring, can get his career back on the fast track in a talent-laden 140 lb division if he emerges victorious. Possible future opponents could include a rematch with Bradley, Amir Khan, Paulie Malignaggi, the aforementioned Urango or fast-rising Devon Alexander.

Holt’s long-time trainer, Aroz “Terrific” Gist of Paterson, understands that Kendall can’t overlook anyone and must take one step at a time.

“The South African guy (Mabuza) is tough. We’ve got to take care of business, first.”

Gist is confident Kendall will do just that, and see’s big things ahead for the 28 year-old Holt.

“Sky’s the limit in 2010,” he stated emphatically.

“This is our time. I can see that fire in his eye again. The speed, the power, everything’s coming together and it makes me want to step my game up as a trainer. He’s getting that swagger back!”

Gist, who’s been with Holt through many ups and downs, understands the road to redemption starts February 27.

“We’ve been together for seven years and this sport is hard, man. But my man is hungry and wants to be a champion again. He wants to prove the doubters wrong, and it’s a blessing to be on his side.”

The off-television portion of the card includes a number of instate fighters including junior middleweights Glen Tapia (Passaic), Tyrone Miles (Camden) and Ossie Duran (Paterson), as well as a four round light heavyweight match up between Troy Maxwell (Galloway Township) and Todd Eriksson (Dover).

The Holt-Mabuza fight will be aired on Fox Sports Net, and tickets can be purchased at ticketmaster.com, or by calling 215-765-0922. The card is being promoted by Top Rank, in association with Peltz Boxing.

Adamek outpoints Estrada; Farrell and Douglin win decisions in Newark!!!

By Matt Yanofsky and Arben Paloka

Tomasz Adamek is originally from Poland, but when he fights thousands of miles away at the Prudential Center in Newark, he is right at home. 10,123 screaming Polish fans packed the arena last night for his second fight at heavyweight and chanted non stop from the moment they entered the building; and they sure had a lot to cheer for.

Adamek retained his IBF International heavyweight title with a hard fought twelve round unanimous decision over 2004 US Olympian Jason “Big Six” Estrada. Estrada came out aggressive against Adamek, who is generally a slow starter, tagging the Secaucus based Pole with a plethora of overhand rights. Adamek started to take control of the pace beginning in the third, working off of multi punch combinations to Estrada’s head.

The bout continued to be fought in close quarters, with Adamek putting together combinations, while Estrada used a Floyd Mayweather style defense before countering with right hands and left hooks. It was evident that this fight was a test of wills and who would be the first to break down. Adamek has been in similar battles in the past, but was a true test for him at an unfamiliar weight.

Estrada landed a number of good left hooks that stopped Adamek in his tracks, but he was unable to capitalize, electing to consistently throw just one punch. Adamek had trouble with the slick and motivated Estrada, but continually used a high punch output to take competitive rounds.

Estrada began to fight with more urgency in the 10th, using clubbing rights ala Samuel Peter, but Adamek’s famed chin kept him out of any serious danger. The challenger got off to a solid start early in the 11th, but a consistent workrate by the champion over the next round and a half guided him to victory.

Scores were 115-113, 116-112, and a questionable 118-110 for Adamek. 15Rounds scored the contest 116-112 for Adamek, as did a number of ringsiders.

Adamek improves to 40-1 with 27 KO’s, while Estrada, who came in at a career light 237 lbs and displayed that he is no push over, returns to Providence, RI 16-3 (4 KO’s).

The victory most likely sets up an April 24 HBO aired match up between Adamek and heavyweight contender Cris Arreola, whose trainer Henry Ramirez was ringside for tonight’s action.

Peter "Kid Chocolate" Quillin is back in the New York groove! After a year layoff, Quillin stepped back into the ring against a fearsome opponent in Fernando Zuniga. They wasted no time in getting to know each other, as they immediately began exchanging punches. In the first round, Quillin had the upper hand as he landed two strong left hooks, but Zuniga is certainly no slouch himself, as he closed out the round with an illegal blow to the back of Quillin's head hoping to impose himself as the bully in the ring.

They continued until the third round, where Quillin landed a strong right hand and Zuniga followed up with a right hand of his own. For Quillin, the rust was definitely there. His punches were sharp and strong,
but they came only a few at a time. Still, Zuniga's awkward style makes it difficult for anyone to throw solid combinations.

As they entered the seventh round, Quillin was in control, and it looked as if Zuniga was worn down. Quillin continued with his workrate while Zuniga was content with looking for a knockout punch that wouldn't come. By the time the final round came along, a tired Quillin popped his jab to keep the resurging Zuniga at bay. It was too little too late as the final scores read 98-92, 100-90, and 100-90 for Peter "Kid Chocolate" Quillin.

Quillan is now 21-0 with 15 KO’s. Zuniga drops to 28-10 with 20 KO’s. The victory also gave those at ringside free chocolate, as Quillin continued his famed post fight tradition of tossing candy into the crowd.

Popular Atlantic City, NJ based Pole Patrick “The Machine” Majewski scored an impressive six round unanimous decision over Youngstown, OH’s Anthony Pietrantonio. Majewski came into the ring with a buzz cut and plain red trunks, thus bared a resemblance to his countryman Tomasz Adamek. Majewski is also an all action fighter, who will give two to take one if necessary. Fortunately for him, it wasn’t tonight.

Majewski controlled all six rounds of the super middleweight contest, tagging the awkward Pietrantonio with hard right hands and thunderous hooks to the body. Pietrantonio was hurt in the third and sixth rounds, but represented the fighting city that he hails from well by never giving up. Scores were 60-54 on all three cards for Majewski.

“I can’t say I was trying to knock him out and wasn’t frustrated that I couldn’t finish him” said Majewski, who upped his record to 12-0 with 7 KO’s after the victory. “He was a much bigger fighter than me. He fought at light heavyweight in the past and I am naturally a middleweight”.

Majewski also made it known that his ring attire was no coincidence.

“Tomasz Adamek is a great fighter and I have followed him from the beginning. I study his tapes he is very smart, dynamic and has a good jab”.

Pietrantonio falls to 6-4 (5 KO’s) with the loss.

2008 National Golden Gloves Middleweight Champion Denis “Mommas Boy” Douglin of Morganville upped his record to 7-0 (3 KO’s) after decision late replacement Eddie Hunter from Seattle. Washington. Douglin used a consistent offensive attack to control virtually the entire fight, but was unable to deck his much bigger opponent. Scores were 60-54 twice and 59-54.

Douglin was originally scheduled to fight at junior middleweight against Latif Mundy, but scaled in at 162 lbs tonight to Hunter’s 167. He plans to fight at 154 in his next bout.

"I had to take what I can get since I needed to fight", Douglin said after the fight. "It was five months since I fought and I knew nothing about Hunter coming in. It honestly was a let down since I dropped my weight to 154 lbs, and had to fight a guy 167 lbs."

Cruiserweight Patrick Farrell of Jersey City scored an impressive four round decision against local rival Jon “The Fighting Marine” Schneider. Farrell decked the Contender Season 4 participant with a right hand in round one and three, but the Yonkers, NY native showed tremendous heart and never stopped moving forward. The scorecards read 40-33 and 40-34 twice.

"Once I caught him and knocked him down, I was trying to get him out of there, but I missed on some big shots", Farrell said after the fight. "I saw that Schneider said he didn't think the fight was going to go the distance so I said f**k this kid and I had to show him what I had"!.

Farrell moves to 5-0 (3 KO's) with the victory as Schneider dips to 7-5-1 (4 KO's).

Decorated amateur Ismayl Sillakh of the Ukraine improved to 10-0 (9 KO’s) after stopping tough Houston, TX native Larry Pryor inside of four rounds. Sillakh displayed why he is considered a notable prospect, tagging Pryor with hard jabs, straight right hands and body punches during the first three rounds. Pryor was decked hard twice via left hooks in round four and referee Steve Smoger stopped the one-sided contest following the second knockdown at 0:47. Pryor falls to 6-6 (4 KO’s) with the defeat.

2008 US Olympian, Sadam Ali of Brooklyn, NJ took on fellow Brooklynite Jason Thompson in the walk out bout. Ali, a storied amateur, was in zero danger throughout the contest, but had a major mishap in the dressing room. After arriving at the arena, Ali opened his bag and realized his boxing shoes were nowhere to be found. Luckily, Denis Douglin, who fought earlier in the night, offered a helping hand, or should we say shoes.

Ali was in control throughout the entire bout. He routinely landed powerful straight punches throughout the fight and was able to land then in rapid-fire combinations. Despite the constant barrage of powerful punches in a very one sided fight, Ali was unable knock his opponent down. That came as quite a shock to those still left in the arena. In the end of this welterweight contest, all three judges scored the bout 40-36 in favor of Ali.

Ali improves 5-0 with 2 KO’s, while the noticeably bigger Thompson, who somehow missed weight by 18 lbs for a fight in 09’, drops to 5-5-1 (4 KO’s).

Adamek-Estrada Preview!

Main Events presents an intriguing crossroads bout tonight at the Prudential Center in Newark when local favorite Tomasz “Goral” Adamek (39-1, 27 KO’s) defends his recently won IBF International heavyweight championship against 2004 US Olympian Jason “Big Six” Estrada (16-2. 4 KO’s).

Adamek will make his second start at heavyweight after previously winning belts at light heavy and cruiserweight. The Secaucus based Pole made quite the impression during his debut in the 201+ division, demolishing faded contender Andrew Golota last October.

The highly anticipated bout was billed as the “Polish Fight of the Century” but barely was one, as Adamek twice dropped Golota before the one sided drubbing was stopped in the fifth round. Against Golota, Adamek used his athleticism and hard power punches to simply overwhelm his once promising countryman.

Although Adamek’s chin, heart and willingness to mix it up made him the star he is today, he’s shown improvements in his boxing ability as of late, using a powerful jab to keep opponents at bay. His long term success heavyweight remains to be seen, but it’s only fair to say so far so good.

Estrada has twice failed in notable bouts, but has the chance of a lifetime to revitalize his once promising career against Adamek. Estrada is a classy boxer with quick hands, but doesn’t have much pop in his punches. He has also had well documented difficulties staying in shape.

His first defeat came against amateur rival Travis Walker (who Estrada beat three out of four times with headgear on). Estrada came in against Walker undertrained and overconfident, scaling in at a career high 257 lbs before dropping a majority decision. The Walker fight turned out to be a beauty in disguise, as Estrada rededicated himself en route to dominating his next eight opponents while weighing no more than 245 lbs. The win streak guided him to a fight with top ten heavyweight Alexander Povetkin.

Estrada got off to a good start against the former Olympic Gold Medalist, but was hurt down the stretch and dropped a competitive decision. In his most recent bout, he scored a 7th round stoppage over the upset-minded Zuri Lawrence.

Stylistically, this bout has the makings to be a good one. Estrada’s aforementioned ability to box (he holds skillful victories over gatekeepers/formers contenders in Robert Wiggins, Dominic Jenkins, Lance Whitaker, Derek Bryant and Lawrence) will definitely present problems for Adamek. The last quick-handed boxer Adamek fought was Chad Dawson; the same man who handed him his lone defeat; thus some insiders consider the Providence, RI native a live underdog to say the least.

Estrada also realizes the importance of this bout, weighing in at a career lightest 237 last night. With Adamek’s first true test at heavyweight against coming against a fighter desperate to show why he was once considered a top prospect, tonight’s fight looks to be one worth the price of admission.

Harris training hard for February 20 Bout Against Matthysse!

By Brandon Estrict

Former WBA Light-Welterweight champion Vivian Harris, 29-3-1 (19), keeps on trucking.

His fight with undefeated Lucas Martin Matthysse, scheduled to be on the off-TV portion of the Andre Berto-Shane Mosley HBO headlined card, was canceled when the Haitian born Berto withdrew after losing 8 family members in the natural disaster that ravaged the Caribbean nation. While Berto’s situation understandably canned the entire card, Harris was unsure if the fight was going to be rescheduled. Luckily, the Carlstadt resident received word that he will still have the opportunity to face Matthysse.

Harris will now take on the unbeaten Argentinean, who is 25-0 (23), February 20 in Mexico City, Mexico. The bout is Harris’ first since his fight with Noe Bolanos last summer, in which an accidental clash of heads produced a frightening outcome. Harris collapsed just seconds after the vicious clash and was taken out of the arena on a stretcher. The bout was declared a no-contest after two rounds.

For Matthysse, a fight with Harris represents a significant step up in the class of his, thus far, soft-touch opposition.

Harris, meanwhile, hopes to become the first man to beat Matthysse, the brother of fringe contender Walter, and get his career back on track.

“Vivian’s been working hard”, said Harris’ co-trainer Aroz “Terrific” Gist, a Paterson native who also handles training duties for Kendall Holt.

“A couple fights ago (in a bout with Octavio Narvaez) he was fighting a tough guy and he had to come from behind and stop him to win. He’s hungry, he sees the doubters out there and he wants to prove them wrong and become a world champion again”.

Harris finishes up camp at the end of next week and will head to Mexico City for final preparations.

Quotes from Adamek Estrada Final Presser!

Kathy Duva, CEO Main Events –“Tomasz has to win against Jason Estrada before he can realize his dream of being the heavyweight champion. It’s a tremendous fight, people are watching it closely. We are delighted to be promoting it.”

“A lot of people are asking me why Tomasz took this fight. It is one of those fights where it seems as if we brought in a young guy who pretty much plays to Tomasz’s “not so strengths”; I don’t want to say weaknesses because I don’t think Tomasz has any of those! Jason’s got strength, he’s got speed, he’s got movement. He’s got a lot of the things that have given Tomasz problems in the past. This fight will give Tomas a good opportunity to deal with all those things.”

“Tomasz is never afraid, he amazes me. He goes into each fight calm and cool, and always confident that he will win. We all believe in him. We know he will give us another great fight, in exciting Adamek fashion and add another victory to his record.”

Tomasz Adamek - “I never underestimate anyone, ever. This is boxing; you have to be prepared every time because you can lose not only the fight but also your health. I know what’s at stake on Saturday – for me and for Jason.”

“I’m always asked if I feel worthy to be in the heavyweight division and my answer always is – just watch me fight and you’ll know the answer. I don’t expect anybody to respect me because I was champion in two other weight classes – just enjoy what you see when I’m in the ring. I did not lose any strength as compared to being a light heavyweight or cruiser weight. Contrary – fighting at my natural weight helped me be a better boxer. I expect to weigh around 222 pounds for the fight. That’s natural weight and power, zero loss of energy.”

“Mine will be a great mix of European and American style boxing because of my two trainers – Roger Bloodworth and Andrzej Gmitruk.“

“Jason is a very unorthodox fighter for this weight class, buy I always believed that no matter who I’m fighting against, it is up to me if I win or lose. I know his strengths; I’m sure he thinks he knows my weaknesses. But whatever we are saying now makes no difference whatsoever. You can prove yourself in only one way – by winning. And this is exactly what I intend to do on Saturday. Don’t blink, don’t miss a second”.

“I will win.”

Jason Estrada – “Funny thing is when I was playing video games as a light heavyweight I was always playing as Tomasz Adamek. Loved his style and I still love what he did in light heavy and cruiserweight division. But this is different story, he’s among big boys now and it will be over his head to fight people like me. Experience, ring ability – everything is on my side. He’s making a big error thinking that beating aging Golota makes him a good heavyweight. Not at all.”

“I also understand that he has to say the things he’s saying – about putting me on canvas, talking about other fights after fighting me. He has to believe it, but believing and doing it are two different things.”

“This was my best training camp ever – by far. More than 8 weeks of very hard work, no injuries, no problems. I’m in my prime, I have to prove this now and help Adamek to fight Steve Cunningham again – as a cruiserweight. After this fight he will be finished in my division. I will prove that those are not just words this coming Saturday.”

Jimmy Burchfield, CES – “Main Events is the greatest promotion company in the whole sport. They only made one mistake; and that was picking Jason Estrada!”

“I want to thank all of the Polish people that have come here to support Tomasz Adamek, but Jason “Big Six” Estrada is fighting for United States of America. He’s fighting for his classmates of the 2004 Olympians. He’s fighting for every future, past and present Olympian. We don’t come to this fight as an opponent. We come to fight, we come to win.”

“I see some of the media and HBO looking past Jason Estrada. You are all making a big, big, big mistake. Jason’s won every amateur title you can imagine. He’s fought the real fighters, so this is going to be a real fight.”

Tamara-Calderon in the Works?

Manager Nelson Fernandez informed GSFS that talks between his newly crowned IBF Junior Flyweight champion Carlos Tamara of North Bergen and WBO/Ring Magazine champion Ivan Calderon of Guaynabo, PR are likely to take place in the coming days about a unification match in Puerto Rico.

“We understand that Calderon is a longtime champion and a great fighter, but we are looking for a fair negotiation”, stated Fernandez. “Everyone wanted to see Calderon vs Viloria, but Carlos is the man that beat the man, so this is the fight to make!”

Tamara, 21-4 (15 KO’s), scored a shocking 12th round TKO to take Viloria’s belt January 23 in The Philippines. The 2004 Olympian was behind on points, but battled back in what many insiders consider the biggest upset thus far in 2010.

Unbeaten at 33-0-1 with 6 wins by kayo, Calderon is regarded as one of the top fighters on the planet. The slick boxing Puerto Rican was a longtime title holder at Strawweight (105 lbs), before moving to junior flyweight, where he has five successful defenses.

Tamara and a member of Universal Promotions are heading to Puerto Rico Tuesday to stop by a number of radio and TV stations to spice up the potential fight.

E-mails to Puerto Rico based promotional firm PR’s Best Boxing weren’t immediately returned, but Calderon is tentatively scheduled to fight in April.

The "New" Shamone Alvarez Looking to Emerge Victorious Saturday Night in AC!

On Saturday February 6th, Atlantic City’s welterweight contender Shamone “The Truth” Alvarez (20-2, 11KO) will look to get his career back underway and once again begin his ascent into the upper echelon of the welterweight division when he takes on Mexican knockout artist, Alexis Camacho (17-2, 16KO). The show, promoted by Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing, will take place at the Tropicana Casino and Resort and be broadcast live on GoFightLive.tv.

SHAMONE “THE TRUTH” ALVAREZ

The 33-year-old Alvarez began his professional career in 2002, and went onto to string together 19 consecutive victories, including picking up the WBO NABO welterweight title. In 2007 Alvarez squared off against Joshua Clottey in an official IBF title eliminator, dropping a decision to the eventual IBF welterweight champion.

After the loss Alvarez took some time off from the sport. He returned just under a year later to win a ten round decision over Terrance Cauthen in December of 2008.

The win over Cauthen put Alvarez in yet another official IBF title eliminator, this time against Delvin Rodriguez. The fight, which took place in March of last year, saw Alvarez lose a razor thin decision in a fight that many argued Alvarez could have won.

In October, Alvarez was scheduled to face undefeated Canadian contender Antonin Decarie (now 23-0), but the week of the fight, Alvarez injured his knee while running and had to pull out.

Alvarez is now back and according to the contender, more ready and hungrier than ever.

“This is my time,” stated Alvarez. “Physically and mentally I am one-hundred percent ready and focused to climb back into the world title picture. In both my losses I know what I did wrong and I have learned from them. You are going to see the old but at the same time the new and improved Shamone Alvarez when I get in that ring from now on. When I first came up I was very aggressive and took the fight right to my opponents. In my two losses my lack of aggressiveness cost me the fights, and cost me the world title opportunities. I’m on my third strike, trust me I don’t plan on striking out.”

In the fight against Camacho, Alvarez will be facing a big puncher and someone who will not be afraid to mix it up with him, something that Alvarez is well aware of, and looking forward to.

“I have watched tapes of him and I know that he can crack. You look at his record and you see that he obviously has some power but he has never been inside the ring with someone who is on my level. From what I have seen of him he is a typical Mexican style fighter, he comes forward, he throws big punches, he is durable, but he is there to be hit, and as you will see come Saturday night, he will be hit.”

While Alvarez states that he is not looking past the task at hand, he does have big expectations for himself in 2010.

“2010 is going to be a big year for me. God-willing everything goes well on Saturday, I am looking at a possible March 27th date to fight for the IBO title. Once I pick up the IBO belt, I will then hopefully have a chance to go to Canada to take on Decarie as we have unfinished business. At that point I will be ready to challenge any of the world champions in the welterweight division, it’s just a matter of who gives me that shot. There is no more playing around. You are going to see the dog come out of me this year, and for all those welterweight contenders and champions out there, look out because I’m coming for you.”

Arnaoutis-Rodriguez April 2 at the Mohegan Sun!

Atlantic City’s Mike Arnaoutis will have a shot to rebound from his controversial loss to Tim Coleman when he battles Delvin Rodriguez April 2 on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, CT.

Arnaoutis, 22-4-2 (10 KO’s), appeared to do just enough to warrant a victory against the awkward Coleman, but dropped a hotly contested split decision. The former USBA Junior Welterweight champion will move up to welterweight for the first time after reportedly having severe difficulty making the 140 lb limit.

Rodriguez, like Arnaoutis, is looking to get back on track following an L. The Danbury, CT native dropped a unanimous decision in Poland to hometown favorite Rafael Jackiewicz and a split decision to Isaac Hlatshwayo for the then vacant IBF Welterweight crown back in August. Ironically, Rodriguez, 24-4-2 (14 KO’s), was also a USBA titleholder that came up short in his biggest bouts.

Arnaoutis and Rodriguez are scheduled to meet over 12 rounds.

Amateur Boxing Update: McNeeley invited to Camp Klitschko; Hackensack PAL Team to compete in National Silver Gloves!

Paterson’s Norman McNeeley will join unified heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko’s training camp for his March 20 title defense against Eddie Chambers. Known locally as “Pooh”, the 20 year old McNeeley is a standout amateur, winning the National Silver Gloves and Junior Olympics among others.

Klitschko’s assistant trainer Ali Bashir reportedly discovered McNeeley during a sparring session with former title contender Monte Barrett and was highly impressed with what he saw. McNeeley, who trains at Ike & Randy’s in Paterson, leaves next week for the Austria based camp.

Hackensack PAL Team Looking to Shine at National Silver Gloves

Five young fighters from the Hackensack Police Athletic League are heading to Kansas on Wednesday with hopes of returning with a National Silver Gloves Championship. The team is lead by nine time National and four time World amateur champion Julian “Hammer Hands” Rodriguez.

Rodriguez is amongst the best amateurs in the country, sporting a sensational 97-7 record. Rodriguez served as one of newly crowned IBF Junior Flyweight champion Carlos Tamara’s sparring partners leading up to his fight with Brian Viloria. The 15 year old North Bergen native has also been featured in a number of newspaper/TV stories.

Joining Rodriguez is Trent Tedesco (178 lbs), Jimmy Serra (75 lbs), Isaac Cuellar (70 Lbs) and 145 Isaiah Castanon. The PAL team won both state and regional tournaments, earning them an invite to the Nationals. The National Silver Gloves take place February 3-6.
