Diaz Gets Past Lopez; Tapia Stops Rodriguez in Key West!

Featherweight prospect Jorge "Kid" Diaz of New Brunswick improved to 13-0 with 8 KO's after earning a close unanimous decision over previously unbeaten Mexican Alejandro Lopez. Diaz got off too a strong start, dropping Lopez in each of the first two rounds with hard left hooks, but quickly cooled down.

Lopez battled back in the middle rounds, using snappy and consistent one-two combos to keep the shorter Diaz out of range. Although he was noticeably tired, fighting in an eight rounder for his first time, Diaz pressed the final stanza to take the bout.

Scores were 76-74 on all three cards, as the two knockdowns turned out to be the difference maker. Lopez drops to 13-1 (2 KO's) with the defeat.

Former amateur star and highly touted Passaic based junior middleweight Glen Tapia outslugged Carlos Rodriguez for two rounds before the referee stopped the contest prior to the third. Tapia came out firing from the opening bell, landing a number of hard left hooks and body shots on Rodriguez, who had some success as well. Rodriguez was rocked and nearly dropped in the second and spent the majority of the round eating leather prior to the stoppage.

Tapia, who returns April 17 in Atlantic City and has been fighting regularly on Top Rank cards, improves to 5-0 (4 KO's). Rodriguez slips to 3-3 (3 KO's).

The card was aired on Fox Sports Espanol.

Diaz and Tapia are both promoted by Pound 4 Pound Promotions and are expected to be on hand for Thursday's night card in North Bergen.
