Todd Eriksson: From Opponent to Hometown Favorite

By Sean Connolly

Light Heavyweight, Dover New Jersey resident Todd Eriksson has been on a journey to become an assured boxer but has a record of 1-4-1 thus far. Todd has had some tough fights in the ring and in life as well. He has fought against guys with winning records and undefeated records. During Todd’s amateur career he tasted victories, both, in the US and abroad. During a competition on Isle of Jersey, England, he won
the Boxer of the Night in front of the great Ernie Shavers.

In all sports there are always favorites and underdogs and Eriksson has been in the underdog’s corner his whole career. This Friday, at Schuetzen Park in North Bergen, he is the favorite.

Trainer Ed Lehey said, “Todd is focused on his career, he has been training hard for this fight.” His opponent is Joseph Dunn 0-2 from Philadelphia is now in the underdog’s corner. “Todd has become more of a tactician with power in his right hand.” Lehey also went on to add “Todd has the heart of a lion.”

Eriksson has been in the gym full time in the hopes that this is the fight that is going to turn his life and career around. Like a lot of boxers, he has come from the streets where trouble comes to those not looking to avoid it and not to those who stay in the gym and in the ring.

Another great New Jersey fighter Chuck Wepner, the Bayonne Bleeder, once said “I’ve been a survivor my whole life” and so has Todd Eriksson. In his last fight he was cut pretty badly just like Wepner had often been. Todd fought through this and showed he can, not only stay in the ring but survive.

Everyone likes to cheer for the underdog. Todd Eriksson has been that person. Now he is the favorite. Come witness his journey from becoming the underdog to the favorite at Schuetzen Park in North Bergen tomorrow evening.
