Angel Concepcion: Newark’s Future Light Heavyweight Champion

By Sean Connolly

This Saturday, Newark light heavyweight Angel Concepcion will continue on his journey to becoming a world champion at the Prudential Center. Angel will be boxing Philadelphia native Maurice Amaro, who has a record of one win and two losses. This will be Angel’s third fight since turning professional in May of 2010. His first and second fight both consisted of unanimous decisions.

Angel is no stranger to the ring; he has been boxing since the age of ten and had over 100 amateur bouts. During his amateur career, he was able to win the Mid-West Olympic Trials Championship in Columbus, Ohio. That had given him a chance to qualify for the 2008 US Olympic Team. Angel lost his bid to make the team by losing a controversial decision to Christopher Downs of the US Army.

Angel’s been training in Newark’s own Combat Gym under the tutelage of Angel Concepcion Sr. who said, “He is in really good shape.” His coach also believes that with the proper training you can win the fight before the fight happens.
“(Angel is) fighting a tough Kid from Philly,” Vinny Lamanna, one of Concepcion’s advisors added. “This kid can really fight. They are not going to fight any cream puffs.”

In all sports, everyone guarantees a winner, but Lamanna went on to say that in a year and half Concepcion will be boxing for a world championship. His camp plans to keep him busy.

Angel is on his road to becoming a true champion both in and out of the ring by going to the local schools to talk to school’s children. He delivers a positive message to stay in school and to stay off the streets. Concepcion should have the support of the community in his corner as well by personally selling over 100 tickets to witness his bout. Angel’s camp is very thankful to the promoters of the fight for investing in local boxers because it gives them a chance to showcase their skills in front of their neighbors.
