Newark, NJ – July 8, 2010 – Mayor Cory A. Booker, the Newark Municipal Council, Deputy Mayor Margarita Muñiz, Newark Now President Edgar Izurieta and other dignitaries will join with Newark residents to kick off the City of Newark’s 2010 Super Summer Initiative in Newark’s largest municipal park, Nat Turner Park, located at 251-289 18th Avenue at the corner of Boyd Street and Muhammad Ali Avenue, on Monday, July 12, 2010, at Noon. This year’s Super Summer celebrity guests are professional boxers Zab “Super” Judah and Newark native Alex “The Brick City Bullet” Perez.

Anchored by the Division of Recreational and Cultural Affairs’ summer activities, “Super Summer” is a program initiated in 2006 by Mayor Booker and Newark Now to provide safe havens for youth and safety zones for the community. For the past three years, Newark has partnered with numerous community organizations, non-profits, and private groups to bring City residents a wide array of activities, ranging from basketball tournaments to nutrition programs to music in the parks.

This year’s initiative is themed a “Super Healthy Summer” and is focusing on reducing childhood obesity, to prevent adult illnesses like diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure. Mayor Booker is currently serving as co-chair of the First Lady Michelle Obama’s national task force which is leading the “Let’s Move!” campaign to end the problem of childhood obesity within a generation.
