Contreras Cruzes Past Eric;Arnaoutis Suffers Another Setback!
Irvington based and Dominican born lightweight Francisco "The Phenom" Contreras earned a fairly one sided eight round unanamous decision over a very game Eric Cruz of Puerto Rico.
Contreras, who entered the bout with 13 stoppages in 14 victories, did not display the devastating power his record suggested tonight, taking his time and boxing throughout the majority of the bout. The lankier Contreras controlled most of the action but did have to shake off a few hard shots from Cruz in the process.
Scores were 80-72 twice and 78-74.
Contreras improves to to 15-0 (13). Cruz slides to 7-4-3 (7).
Atlantic City's "Mighty" Mike Arnaoutis dropped a one sided ten round decision to contender Demetrius Hopkins of Philadelphia.
The two combatants recently moved up from junior welterweight, where interestingly enough, they both dropped a decision to Kendall Holt in AC. Hopkins clearly had much more left in the tank, using his reach advantage along with precise timing to consistently stymie Arnaoutis. Arnaoutis appeared to hurt his left hand in the early rounds and was never able to get a rhythm going or find his way on the inside of the far fresher Hopkins.
Scores were 99-91 twice and 100-90.
Hopkins is now 30-1-1 (11). Arnaoutis, who should consider retirement after two consecutive one sided losses, falls to 22-6-2 (10).
Both bouts were part of ESPN 2's Friday Night Fights Telecast.
